Alvin Lee - In Tennessee. CD. (Repertoire Records - REPUK1029)

Unusual album on which Brit blues master and guitar god Lee, formerly of Ten Years After of course, teams up with one of his heroes- Elvis Presley's right hand man Scotty Moore. And if that isn't good enough, may we draw your attention to the fact that thwacking the traps for this session is Jordanaires skinsman DJ Fontana. Recorded in Nashville, and about as authentic as it gets, this is the sound of two generations of rock coming together to build on the foundations they laid down between 40 and 50 years ago. Timeless and thoroughly enjoyable.

1977 reform album by the original Animals (Eric Burdon, Alan Price, Hilton Valentine, Chas Chandler and John Steel) made eleven years after recording their last album. CD version of the band's second album, originally released on CBS in 1970, that came hot on the heels of their debut, Sacrifice. Here the group's inherently Satanic music evolved into an original amalgam of progressive rock, folk, british blues and hard rock. Check out the beautiful "The Gypsy", which highlights Clive Jones' flute, and you'll realize why this album is a milestone of the genre.

Bloodrock - 2. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4535)

From 1971, this Texas bunch of long-hairs played a heavy but melodic brand of rock with a seriously bad attitute. "D.O.A." in particular is a heavy organ-based piece with police sirens and is very much in the anti-war, anti-space race, anti-everything vein of the era. It ROCKS!!

Bloodrock - Bloodrock. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4534)

Discovered by Grand Funk's manager, this Texas band played a downright dirty brand of heavy rock, tinged with acid guitar. Fans of Black Sabbath will dig the sledgehammer riffs on "Melvin Laid An Egg", whilst endless guitar noodling & twiddly keyboard motifs abound throughout. High Energy skull crushing stuff from 1970 that deserves more recognition.

Budgie - Budgie. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4012)

1971 debut album from Cardiff's Budgie. Although never as big as Led Zep, Sabbath or Deep Purple, Budgie were one of the best of the British rockers through the early seventies. Tracks like "Guts" show how heavy they could be, but they were equally at home playing ballads that build up to rockers on tracks such as "The Author". Reminiscent of Wishbone Ash in their prime, Budgie were much underrated in their time. This release gives us a chance to re-evaluate their work and influence over generations of rock and metal acts.

Budgie - If I Were Brittania. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4372)

Looking for a fresh start, Budgie signed with A&M Records in 1976 and released" If I Were Brittania, I'd Waive the Rules". The band continued to incorporate new elements into their sound here, showing a special interest in funk on such tracks as "Anne Neggen" and "Sky High Percentage." The stark "Black Velvet Stallion" shows an interesting use of space over it's 8 minutes. Ironically, Budgie still sound most at home when injecting an adventurous progressive rock flavor to songs like "Heaven Knows Your Name" and "You're Opening Doors," both of which also benefit from Tony Bourge's classy guitar harmonies.

Budgie - Impekable. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4371)

Budgie's 1978 offering, Impeckable, continues the bands style of adventurous songwriting and refreshing sense of humor . The group continues exploring its heavy funky obsessions on "Dish It Up" and "Love for You and Me" while shelling out massive metallic riffs on "Melt the Ice Away" and "Smile Boy Smile." The great musicianship on "Pyramids" and the wistful guitar melodies of "All at Sea," provided by founding member Tony Bourge shows this band still could cut the mustard.

Budgie - In For The Kill. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4027)

A UK top 30 album in 1974 and the bands first chart album and confirmed their consistent metal songwriting. Like past releases, the album features huge metal riffs courtesy of guitarist Tony Bourge and wailing vocals from bassist Burke Shelley. "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" (their second song to be covered by Metallica) contains a repetitive and continuous riff, while "Zoom Club" stresses the importance of the almighty power chord. The title track ( covered by Van Halen back in their club days) is metal at its most vibrant, while the group balances the album by including a folk number with Beatles-like vocal harmonies ("Wondering What Everyone Knows"). "Living On Your Own" continues the band's tradition of lengthy closing numbers, ending another sadly overlooked album from this British band.

Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4013)

Budgie's third album, originally issued in 1973, includes "Breadfan" (covered Metallica) and Never Turn Your Back on a Friend, was another slab of the band's signature metal sound. Budgie's popularity flourished in the UK, yet their influence was eventually felt by many notable American bands (Metallica, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, etc.). The mammoth riffs created by guitarist Tony Bourge are definitely on par with Black Sabbath riffmaster Tony Iommi, while vocalist/bassist Burke Shelley's voice is a cross between Robert Plant and early Geddy Lee. Highly recommended.

First time on CD for Budgie's 1981 LP that hit the UK album charts when first issued by RCA records.Often thought of as a cross between Black Sabbath (due to their plodding, molten-heavy riffs) and Rush (due to their singer's high-pitch, Geddy Lee-esque wail), the somewhat obscure British metal outfit Budgie has influenced countless outfits. Despite enduring assorted lineup shifts throughout their history on this album budgie prove that they still had what it took later in their career.

Cressida - Cressida (Jewel Case Version). CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4299)

First released in 1970, this amazing Vertigo release was the debut of one of the UKs finest early progressive rock bands. Along with bands such as Fantasy and T2 this is melodic and elaborate without ever becoming overbearing or pompous. In places orchestrated and decorated with beautiful vocals and Caravan like mellotron work, this is a fine example of what the term 'progressive' originally stood for and should be heard by anyone who thinks that Spock's Beard are the epitome of prog-rock.

Exuma - Exuma. CD. (Repertoire Records - REPUK 1006)

Released in 1970, this debut from the New York based multi cultural seven piece was effectively the first World music album. Available for the first tie on CD. Understandbly falling flat in Europe (but selling well in other territories) on it's original release, now this album would be widely embraced as the brilliant example of world music it is. Rarely bothering with specific Western song structure, an extreme tribal vibe dominates proceedings with rhasping vocals, bells, hand claps and hollering being the main instruments on display. This is an admittedly challenging but ultimately rewarding piece of world folk. Seven tracks spanning forty minutes including: the eight minute closing track "The Vison", "Junkanoo" and "You Don't Know What's Going On." Check out the freaky cover!

Exuma - Exuma II. CD. (Repertoire Records - REPUUK 1007)

Released only a few months after their debut in 1970, this is more of the same from the New York group with roots in the West Indies and the Bahamas. Released on CD for the first time. Based on a bed of Afro American and Indian percussion and led by tribal chanting, it is another fascinating album that challenges and enthrals the listener. Noticably more tuneful than it's predecessor (in places anyway), there is the odd disturbing burst of vocals or percussion that does enough to seriously unnerve. Eight tracks including: "Fire In The Hole", the genuinely freaky "Paul Simon Nontooth" and the Bahamas Folk of "We Got To Go." Possibly even more of an odd front cover than the first Exuma album as well.

From 1972 comes this now completely re-vamped album from the outstanding UK rock outfit this album is more straight-ahead than its predecessor 'Fearless'. Now with 4 bonus tracks and as per the original LP this CD comes with a mini replica die cut sleeve of the original 50's style TV set and plastic screen. This is a very limited edition and will revert to a jewel case after the initail pressing.

Flash And The Pan - Ayla- The Best Of (An Adventure In Sound). CD. (Repertoire Records - REP5034)

The mysterious Flash &The Pan were one of the great enigmas of late 70s-mid 80's pop- like Visage, they never toured, never appeared in any of their own videos, and never had any band photographs taken. In truth though, there was no mystery- it stated clearly on the albums that all songs were written by Vanda & Young, and that's who they were- Harry Vanda and George Young, formerly of the Easybeats and the men behind half of Australia's music industry (Steve Wright, Skyhooks, Rose Tattoo ) in the late 70s. Most famously George was the brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, whom they produced during their classic early days. That simply added to the mystery, as Flash's music was the last thing one would have associated with AC/DC: dark, angular, keyboard based prog-pop that fell in with the more uncool end of the New Wave movement and was characterised by Vanda's unusual spoken vocals, often treated with effects or through a loudhaler, which juxtaposed well with memorable choruses and haunting orchestrations. All the early hits in this style are collected here: 'Hey St Peter' 'Down Among The Dead Men (And The Band Played On)' 'Media Man' 'Captain Beware' 'Atlantis Calling' 'Man In The Middle' and their biggest UK hit 'Waiting For A Train'. Later tracks, such as the massive 1987 Aussie No.1 'Ayla', 'Money Don't Lie' 'Early Morning Wake Up Call" "Midnight Man"and ''Yesterday's Gone" are in a more conventional AOR/hard rock style. Originally the band- and it's name- was intended as a wry joke- but they soon found themselves in the position of having several hit albums and being one of the most successful studio-only projects in rock ,although ironically the barometer of cool would later write them out of rock history. Now, with this excellent digipak set, featuring comprehensive liner notes and an interview with Vanda, you can remember why this band were once so popular.

Debut album from 1970 by the German band who attempted to combine heavy rock, blues, folk and classical motifs into a progressive psychedelic whole. Gods - To Samuel A Son. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4555)

Second album from 1969 that is a little known UK psych classic featuring the wonderful weirdness of "Sticking Wings On Flies" and a whole slew of heavy psych tracks that are reminiscent of The Open Mind, The Accent etc. The Gods, featuring Ken Hensley (later of course in Uriah Heep, but don't hold that against him) made this surprisingly underrated album which is miles ahead of their first work (Genesis - 1968), and it represents an excellent slice of late 60s British psychedelia spilling over into prog, with Beatlesque melodies, eerie 'Home Counties' church organ, psychedelic effects and catchy pop tunes. All original songs, some remeniscent of tracks by Aerovons, Smoke, Kaleidoscope or the finer moments of 'Sergeant Pepper', make up a great record behind a great psychedelic cover.

Widely regarded as one of the most psychedelic UK releases ever, this 1967 album, this was the debut musical offering of the designers Michael English and Nigel Waymouth with members of Art and possibly the odd Rolling Stone. Long stoned freakout jams with trippy effects and lyric poetry, this is truly an awesome artefact that resembles an entire LSD trip. Stunning!! (amazing artwork too....) Jewel box edition.

Hapshash & The Coloured Coat - Western Flier. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4415)

Second album, from 1969, from the graphic design collective with a bunch of underground heavy friends including Tony McPhee of the Groundhogs. Less spacey than their first album, this melds folk, acid rock and blues influences with a great deal of studio trickery such as feedback, phasing etc.... a fascinating example of a bygone era.

Harvey Mandel - Feel The Sound Of Harvey. CD. (Repertoire Records - RR 4715)

1974 release from the Canned Heat guitarist. Blues licks are never too far away and there's more of a reliance on guest vocalists. Mandel's style always seems laidback, even when jamming out in an extended work-out and this is a fine example of his blues rock style.

Heavy Metal Kids - Kitsch. CD. (Repertoire Records - RR 4853)

1977 album from the idiosyncratic UK rock band led by vocalist Gary Holton. Mixing equal quantities of punk, glam, rock (but not metal) and Cockney wide-boy charm ( with Holton's muse somewhere between Steve Marriott, Ian Hunter and Mick Jagger), this was the last album by the band. Holton went on to star in the TV show "Auf Wiedersehen Pet" before his untimely drug-related death, while keyboard player John Sinclair had spells with Uriah Heep and Ozzy Osbourne. This edition contains two bonus tracks.

Iron Butterfly - Scorching Beauty. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4558)

1975 comeback album from the legendary US heavy psych band. Without ever completely scaling the heights of previous releases, once again this was a competent set of heavy rockers with some excellent moments. Includes the excellent '1975 Overture' 'Hard Miseree' 'Searchin Circles' and 'Lonely Hearts' alongside some maybe not so classic tunes: less psychedelia, more stadium rock- but hey, it was the mid Seventies after all! Look out for 'Am I Down' as well- the closest an American band had come at the time to sounding like T Rex or Slade, although one doubts whether Braun and Co had ever heard either of them!!

This compilation marks the 40th anniversary of these beat/garage Berlin legends with a selection of their pop ballads, including their greatest hit singles, rarely heard "B" sides and album tracks. The 4 -eighties tracks are truly dreadful, but their 60s and early 70s output here has plenty of psychedelic effects and includes a version of The Nice's "When I Was Young" and a bizarre German language version of Uriah Heep's "Lady In Black" ("Schwarze Lady").…

1969 album from this German bunch who recorded pop songs in English. Despite this, they were highly popular in their own country and this collection of self-written tunes could well have rivalled The Hollies or Moody Blues for tuneful harmonious power pop. There's a few interesting psychedelic effects in evidence here too. Bargain Price!

Procol Harum - Exotic Birds And Fruit. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4917)

The bands 8th album from 1974, was produced by Chris Thomas. A departure from the more familiar orchestral style, with a far rockier slant than its predecessor, it features some excellent guitar work from Mick Grabham, and some of the most pounding compositions of Brooker and Reid- the opening 'Nothing But The Truth' is just one example, whilst the horror-rock theme of 'Monieur R Monde' echoes the 'Home' album's more disturbing moments. The epic-length 'Idol' is classic Brit prog-blues incarnate, 'As Strong As Samson' (featuring BJ Cole) and 'New Lamps For Old' are two of their loveliest ballads, and the monotone 'Thin End Of The Wedge' posibly the oddest song they ever recorded.Digipack with two bonus tracks.

Procol Harum - Home. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4669)

1971 album with a slightly different line-up from previously, but still concentrating on the twin keyboard and mock classical approach, although the wah-wah Hendrix like guitar of Robin Trower was becoming more noticeable, and the lack of a fulltime organist gave the multitalented Chris Copping more room to play bass. On 'Whisky Train' the band actually sound like Blue Cheer or some other heavy-as-lead power trio, execept that there were four of them (five including lyricist Keith Reid) More importantly, this was the album on which Reid, after a nervous breakdown, really spilled his guts onto the page, replacing the quaint allegories and Lear/Carroll-influenced acid poetry of the preceding three albums (although 'Whaling Stories' continued the maritime theme of 'A Salty Dog') with a collection of songs about rotting corpses, overdosed girls, executions, sloth and decadence, apocalyptic visions of 'streets awash with blood and pus', Manson, alcoholism, drug dependency, suicide and most worryingly, on 'Still There'll Be More', what sound like actual threats to rape and murder people. This was no longer the twee popsike of 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' or 'She Wandered Through The Garden Fence', this was the sound of a band coming to terms with the end of a hippy dream that had become a nightmare. Which makes the playful 'kiddies board game' design of the cover even more unnerving. . .

Procol Harum - Procol's Ninth. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4919)

Featuring the hit single "Pandora's Box", their 9th (you don't say!) album from 1975 featured a variety of styles and moods and including an inventive cover of The Beatles "Eight Days A Week". In a far more straightahead soul/blues style than the preceding two albums, as shown by choice of producer (Lieber and Stoller, who also wrote 'I Keep Forgetting') and the use of horns, woodwind and strings on several tracks like 'Fool's Gold' 'The Unquiet Zone' and 'Taking The Time', whilst the hard rock end is represented by the wonderfully named 'Typewriter Torment'. However, this being Procol, the bizarre lyrics of Keith Reid still get a chance to shine through, this time on the literary and scholarly 'Without A Doubt' and the somewhat sadistic and horror-based 'The Piper's Tune'. Probably the only band in the world who could make an album recorded in America still sound like it was made in a Peabody Estate just outside Chiswick, and one of the best examples of a band misrepresented by a hit single, Procol deserved this second hour in the sunshine. And of course, it features one of "those" songs that was never a hit but played incessantly on Radio 2, 'The Final Thrust'. Buy it and jog your memory.

Procol Harum - Shine On Brightly. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4667)

Second highly psychedelic album from the UK band whose combinations of surreal lyrics, organ dominated instrumentation and embrace of classical motifs were to be important beginnings for the later progressive rock movement. The lengthy "In Held Twas I" mixes Eastern mysticism with Sergeant Pepper styled psychedelia and depressive poetry to great effect, whilst 'Quite Rightly So' 'Skip Softly' and 'Rambling On' are all examplesof their particularly quaint and English, often disturbing and doom-laden, brand of progressive blues'n'soul. This release comes with three bonus tracks, including the stereo mix of "Homburg".

Procol Harum - Something Magic. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4918)

The bands final album from 1977 is a brave and adventurous blast of progressive rock in an era dominated by change and includes the 18 minute epic poem "The Worm And The Tree", a track which to this day divides the band's fanbase down the middle. Other highlights include the romantic waltz of 'Skating On Thin Ice' the dreamlike 'Strangers In Space' and the by now customary stab at horror-metal (one per album) 'The Mark Of The Claw'. Packed with interesting ideas and sophisticated concepts, this digi CD reissue is supplemented with 2 bonus tracks. Redbone - Potlatch. CD. (Repertoire Records - RES2317)

Redbone were a Native American group founded by Pat & Lolly Vegas. Descended from Yaqui Indians, the brothers were first class musicians who had gained early experience playing on the Hollywood session scene. They later hit on the idea of blending contemporary rock with a fiery traditional Indian spirit to create Redbone's unique tribal rock sound. Funky jams and chanting supply the force behind this exciting music. Potlatch is their 1970 debut album and this reissue comes housed in a digipack and contains 2 bonus tracks.

Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 5078)

CD re-issue housed in a mini card gatefold sleeve of this 1973 album that defined and encapsulated the new dynamic of Renaissance. The second album to feature the 'classic' lineup (although without the electric guitar of Rob Hendry that had dominated its predecessor 'Prologue'), this was also the last to feature any writing contributions from founder member Jim McCarty, as the team of guitarist Mike Dunford and lyricist Betty Thatcher now established itself firmly. Acoustic melodic guitars, fine instrumental interplay, that wonderful voice of Annie Haslam and the introduction of an orchestral backing all combined to create a polished and unique sound. This album is still a fan favourite today and is known for 'Carpet Of The Sun' 'Can You Understand' and the epic-length title track, which features a guest solo from Wishbone Ash man Andy Powell.

Renaissance - Camera Camera. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4628)

One of the great 'reinvention' albums of all time, or alternately the world's most blatant 'Who are you trying to kid' record, depending on one's point of view. Recorded and released in 1981 (after a spell as Nevada) this was an unashamed bid for the Kate Bush/ Hazel O Connor/ Lene Lovich/ Toyah Wilcox market and showed Messrs Haslam, Camp and Dunford (now playing electric guitar for the first time in 10 years) in stripped down form accompanied by lean-sounding synths and syndrums, with new haircuts and clothes (Haslam's transformation from folk princess into flirty, low-cut leather-troozed big haired New Wave queen on the cover has to be seen to be believed) and a set of spiky, angular, uptempo pop-rock songs such as 'Faeries Living At The Bottom Of The Garden' 'Bonjour Swansong' (actually sounding more like Abba than anything else) 'Jigsaw' (complete with X-Ray Spex-style shriek vocal) and 'Running Away From You' all of which had hardened proggers crying into their gatefolds, and sadly failed to wow the youngsters. Looking back, however, these are damn fine tunes, and the album has actually worn better with time than one would have thought. It still brings a chuckle to think of the teacherly Camp and Dunford in their check-flecked Ben Shermans and Converse, but one listen to this album proves that even if the image was second hand, music was first rate.

Renaissance - Prologue. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP 4574)

Originally released in 1972, this album was not only the first Renaissance release to feature the wonderful voice of Annie Haslam, but also included some fine keyboard and guitar driven epics in a progressive rock vein, such as the classically based title track, the shimmering 'Kiev' (sung by Jon Camp) the hauntingly fragile 'Spare Some Love' and 'Sounds Of The Sea', and the eastern acid raga of "Rajah Khan". By now all links to the McCarty-Relf-Relf lineup of the band had been severed except for occasional lyrical contributions from the first named, and the band were well on their way to establishing their true identity which would flower over the course of the next three albums.

1983 album from the long running progressive rock band that was to be their last official album for some time. Much more pop based (check out single 'Richard The Ninth' for an example of how commercial their music had become) but still retaining the complexity of earlier work with Annie Haslam's vocals to the fore it's a pleasing effort. Mini card sleeve re-issue of this progressive Art Rock gem in its purest form from 1974, this album combined thoughtful songwriting with instrumental variation and aplomb and just the right amount of orchestral involvement. An integral part of Renaissance's back catalogue, this release generated much US interest because of the concept of the Tarot card and stands out as a jewel amongst some of the other self-indulgent verbosity of the genre. T- Rex - Bolan's Zipgun. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4846)

Bolan's 1975 album - the first to not mention T Rex on the cover - showed a growing sense of maturity and sophistication as the human chameleon that was Marc Bolan attempted to establish his musical credentials beyond the hordes of screaming teeny boppers that had made him famous. Here he flirts with blues, doo-wop and soul although still retaining certain elements of his metallic boogie hitmaking appeal. Two bonus tracks also included.

This reissue includes five bonus tracks as well as the hit single "I Love To Boogie." Great die-cut digi pak sleeve.

T- Rex - Futuristic Dragon. CD. (Repertoire Records - REP4910)

Marc even played Moog on several tracks on this release, although thankfully full blown progressive rock was noticeably absent. This reissue includes three bonus tracks. Troggs - The Singles As & Bs. 3-CD. (Repertoire Records - REPUK1028)

The Troggs were amongst the best-loved hit makers of the Swinging Sixties. With charismatic vocalisst Reg Presley at at the helm, the group unleashed "Wild Thing" upon the world.
