This is an admittedly challenging but ultimately rewarding piece of world folk. Noticably more tuneful than it's predecessor (in places anyway), there is the odd disturbing burst of vocals or percussion that does enough to seriously unnerve. The mysterious Flash &The Pan were one of the great enigmas of late 70s-mid 80's pop- like Visage, they never toured, never appeared in any of their own videos, and never had any band photographs taken. In truth though, there was no mystery- it stated clearly on the albums that all songs were written by Vanda & Young, and that's who they were- Harry Vanda and George Young, formerly of the Easybeats and the men behind half of Australia's music industry (Steve Wright, Skyhooks, Rose Tattoo ) in the late 70s. Most famously George was the brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, whom they produced during their classic early days. That simply added to the mystery, as Flash's music was the last thing one would have associated with AC/DC: dark, angular, keyboard based prog-pop that fell in with the more uncool end of the New Wave movement and was characterised by Vanda's unusual spoken vocals, often treated with effects or through a loudhaler, which juxtaposed well with memorable choruses and haunting orchestrations. All the early hits in this style are collected here: 'Hey St Peter' 'Down Among The Dead Men (And The Band Played On)' 'Media Man' 'Captain Beware' 'Atlantis Calling' 'Man In The Middle' and their biggest UK hit 'Waiting For A Train'. Later tracks, such as the massive 1987 Aussie No.1 'Ayla', 'Money Don't Lie' 'Early Morning Wake Up Call" "Midnight Man"and ''Yesterday's Gone" are in a more conventional AOR/hard rock style. Originally the band- and it's name- was intended as a wry joke- but they soon found themselves in the position of having several hit albums and being one of the most successful studio-only projects in rock ,although ironically the barometer of cool would later write them out of rock history. Now, with this excellent digipak set, featuring comprehensive liner notes and an interview with Vanda, you can remember why this band were once so popular. |

1971 album with a slightly different line-up from previously, but still concentrating on the twin keyboard and mock classical approach, although the wah-wah Hendrix like guitar of Robin Trower was becoming more noticeable, and the lack of a fulltime organist gave the multitalented Chris Copping more room to play bass. On 'Whisky Train' the band actually sound like Blue Cheer or some other heavy-as-lead power trio, execept that there were four of them (five including lyricist Keith Reid) More importantly, this was the album on which Reid, after a nervous breakdown, really spilled his guts onto the page, replacing the quaint allegories and Lear/Carroll-influenced acid poetry of the preceding three albums (although 'Whaling Stories' continued the maritime theme of 'A Salty Dog') with a collection of songs about rotting corpses, overdosed girls, executions, sloth and decadence, apocalyptic visions of 'streets awash with blood and pus', Manson, alcoholism, drug dependency, suicide and most worryingly, on 'Still There'll Be More', what sound like actual threats to rape and murder people. This was no longer the twee popsike of 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' or 'She Wandered Through The Garden Fence', this was the sound of a band coming to terms with the end of a hippy dream that had become a nightmare. Which makes the playful 'kiddies board game' design of the cover even more unnerving. . . | ) |

Featuring the hit single "Pandora's Box", their 9th (you don't say!) album from 1975 featured a variety of styles and moods and including an inventive cover of The Beatles "Eight Days A Week". In a far more straightahead soul/blues style than the preceding two albums, as shown by choice of producer (Lieber and Stoller, who also wrote 'I Keep Forgetting') and the use of horns, woodwind and strings on several tracks like 'Fool's Gold' 'The Unquiet Zone' and 'Taking The Time', whilst the hard rock end is represented by the wonderfully named 'Typewriter Torment'. However, this being Procol, the bizarre lyrics of Keith Reid still get a chance to shine through, this time on the literary and scholarly 'Without A Doubt' and the somewhat sadistic and horror-based 'The Piper's Tune'. Probably the only band in the world who could make an album recorded in America still sound like it was made in a Peabody Estate just outside Chiswick, and one of the best examples of a band misrepresented by a hit single, Procol deserved this second hour in the sunshine. And of course, it features one of "those" songs that was never a hit but played incessantly on Radio 2, 'The Final Thrust'. Buy it and jog your memory. | ) |

One of the great 'reinvention' albums of all time, or alternately the world's most blatant 'Who are you trying to kid' record, depending on one's point of view. Recorded and released in 1981 (after a spell as Nevada) this was an unashamed bid for the Kate Bush/ Hazel O Connor/ Lene Lovich/ Toyah Wilcox market and showed Messrs Haslam, Camp and Dunford (now playing electric guitar for the first time in 10 years) in stripped down form accompanied by lean-sounding synths and syndrums, with new haircuts and clothes (Haslam's transformation from folk princess into flirty, low-cut leather-troozed big haired New Wave queen on the cover has to be seen to be believed) and a set of spiky, angular, uptempo pop-rock songs such as 'Faeries Living At The Bottom Of The Garden' 'Bonjour Swansong' (actually sounding more like Abba than anything else) 'Jigsaw' (complete with X-Ray Spex-style shriek vocal) and 'Running Away From You' all of which had hardened proggers crying into their gatefolds, and sadly failed to wow the youngsters. Looking back, however, these are damn fine tunes, and the album has actually worn better with time than one would have thought. It still brings a chuckle to think of the teacherly Camp and Dunford in their check-flecked Ben Shermans and Converse, but one listen to this album proves that even if the image was second hand, music was first rate. | ) |
