Accept - Accept. CD. (SPV - SPV07669762) Debut album by leather-clad German metal muthas, led by the inimitable Udo Dirkschneider. Their style was not fully formed at this point (actually bearing a similarity to Swiss rockers Krokus in places) but this is an interesting place to start, and still Very Metal. Contains new liner notes by Udo, alongside photos and memorabilia.

Accept - Breaker. CD. (SPV - SPV07669782) The album that got the band off their small German label and onto CBS. Produced by Michael Wagener, then the hottest dude beyond the controls, and sounding every inch a streamlined metal album for the new decade, with the songwriting partnership between Dirkschneider and bassist Peter Baltes throwing up some of their most accomplished work to date: 'Can't Stand The Night' 'Midnight Highway' 'Son Of A Bitch' and others. They still had a tendency to sound a little too much like Judas Priest, but that ain't no bad thing in itself- if you're going to play Metal, you might as well imitate the gods!! Contains new photos and memorabilia, and liner notes by Udo.

Accept - I'm A Rebel. CD. (SPV - SPV07669772) With the second album, the Teutonic headbangers produced a set of commercial, fistpunching songs full of anthemic Metal mayhem. The title track became a staple of the live set, and the album helped to break them to a wider audience. Shrieking vocals and galloping, punching riffs- true Metal, in other words. Contains new liner notes by Udo, alongside photos and memorabilia.

Accept - Restless And Wild. CD. (SPV - SPV07669792) The album that made the band worldwide stars in metal's firmament. Features 'Fast As A Shark' 'Shake Your Heads' 'Neon Nights' (no relation to the Sabbath song of the same name) and many more horn-raising, fist clenching Metal stormers. If you were an 80s headbanger this was an album you had to own- now own it again with added liner notes and photos!!

Albert Hammond - Revolution Of The Heart. CD. (SPV - SPV08578192) Albert Hammond is one of the true legends, alongside Bacharach and Jimmy Webb, of American AND British popular music, having written for everyone from the Hollies and Leo Sayer to Starship and Tina Turner. Not to mention arrangement work for Sinatra, Roy Orbison, Johhny Cash, Hal David. Are we getting the picture here? He is also the father of Strokes drummer Albert Hammond Jr, as well as being the voice behind the classic one hit wonder 'Free Electric Band'. This is his 2005 album, featuring 14 beautiful songs crafted the way only a master craftsman can.

Amon Duul II - Carnival In Babylon. CD. (SPV - SPV305352) First released in 1972, this album saw a slight change in direction to shorter song based material, still characterised by the tripped out anarchy of previous efforts, but with a more reflective overview. Remastered version comes with four bonus tracks, detailed booklet and housed in a digi.

Amon Duul II - Dance Of The Lemmings (Tanze Der Lemminge). CD. (SPV - SPV304202) Third album by the German cosmic voyagers. This continues their previous well-documented journeys into the world of psychedelic space-rock, and is one of their best and maddest albums. Germany's answer to Jefferson Airplane/Hawkwind. Originally a double album, this CD release captures the album in all it's glory on one disc. Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei. CD. (SPV - SPV085304182) Recorded in 1969 and one of the most astonishing debut albums ever made was this offering from the German masters. Experimental space rock driven by barrages of percussion, duelling violins, lashings of acidic guitar and the bass of future Hawkwind man Dave Anderson. Kraut rock which was often imitated but rarely bettered.Digital remaster,bonus material (two 10 minute tracks) and 3 fold digi packaging.

Amon Duul II - Vive La Trance. CD. (SPV - SPV305382) Possibly the last of the great trippy Amon Düül II albums, this 1973 release by the legendary German psychedelic band had an almost West Coast feel to it, with some excellent instrumental jamming and fine melodic songs- including the evil, voodoo-influenced 'Mozambique' and one pure pop tune, 'Trap' that seems to predate Blondie by three years.

Amon Duul II - Yeti (Remastered ). CD. (SPV - SPV085304192) Released in 1970 as a mammoth double album of improvisational (and inspirational) space rock, this was perhaps the German's psych scene's finest hour. You could find influences here of Hawkwind, Pink Floyd and Can, but who is being influenced by whom? "Vorsprung Durch Tripnik" as they may well have said if they had been able to. Stunning and incomparable.Housed in a digi pack re-creating the original artwork and great liner note booklet.

CD2 includes Candice's take on 'Call It Love' and a new version of 'Street Of Dreams' with Joe Lynn Turner , plus a 20 minute interview. And yes, it does all sound a bit like Renaissance, but why not? They were a great band too!! Verilye ande indeede.

Buddy Miles - Changes. DVD + CD. (SPV - SPV55970637) Buddy Miles is a legend. Both as a solo artist and a bandleader. Having worked with such luminaries as Wilson Picket, Muddy Waters, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and Bootsy Collins, Miles' reputation as a virtuoso in Soul, R'n'B, Blues and Funk is well established. Perhaps though it was his time drumming in Jimi Hendrix's "Band Of Gypsy" for which he is best known. This DVD and Audio CD gives a unique insight into Buddy Miles' enormous versatility. Watching him perform songs as diverse as "Knock on Wood" and "Purple Haze" is like being told the whole story by one reliable expert. 'A Journey To The Hidden Corners Of Your Mind' is the subtitle here and over two newly recorded CDs Roine Stolt and The Flower Kings take you on some fabulous journeys. The opening track 'Garden Of Dreams' is 59 minutes long whilst 'Psychedelic Postcard' is a tribute to Zappa. Holgar Czugay - Clash. Dble CD. (SPV - SPV49352) Live double album featuring tracks recorded in San Francisco, Minneapolis, Cologne and as a bonus on this release, Chicago. Czuaky had moved away from live performance after his split with Can until Dr. Walker (of Air Liquide) invited Czukay to join him onstage during an underground party in Cologne, Germany in the '90's. The impromptu gig led to more formal shows, the best of wich are collected here.

Holgar Czukay - La Luna. CD. (SPV - SPV49382) Originally a single lengthy track (described by Holgar as " a universal contemplative hymn for the masses") , this forty seven minute piece was in production throughout the early 90's before seeing the light of day in '96. Typical of the great man, this is made up of backwards loops, sound effects and synthetic percussion. Features the vocals of U-She. This digitally remastered album has been expanded with the track: "La Lu N." Housed in a high class digipack.

Each of the discs is individually titled and features the following 'Get That Feeling', 'Live At Georgies Club', 'Flashing', 'Something inYour Mind', 'Ballad Of Jimi', & 'On The Killing Floor'. All Remastered and housed in individual sleeves.For psychedelic historians these recordings are very interesting to show the level that Hendrix was at this time in his career typical WahWah and fuzz guitars are demonstrted on "I Feel Good", the standard "I'm A Man" and the volume laden, Hammond supported instrumental "Knock Yourself Out".Fantastic.

John Phillips - John The Wolf King Of L.A.. CD. (SPV - SPV50762) 1969 release from the architect of the Mamas & Papas sound, the primary songwriter and vocal arranger for all of the group's great records and this solo album is no exception the performances on this record are spectacular. Songs such as "April Anne," "Malibu People," and "Holland Tunnel" bear out what a fine songwriter he really was and they are indeed some of the finest songs of his career.Re-mastered and expanded with 8 bonus tracks.

Klaus Schulze - Cyborg. Dble CD. (SPV - SPV305252) This two disc four track set from 1973 is rightfully regarded amongst fans as one of Schulze's masterworks. The Cosmic Orchestra back him up, but it's mostly the man and his keyboards, playing the whole spectrum of electronic bravura. You either know this sort of thing or you don't. If you do you already know how good this sounds, if not you have a treat in store.

Klaus Schulze - Kontinuum. CD. (SPV - SPV49392) The long awaited studio album by the German electronics meister, a man who revolutionised the genre and a living legend. Made up of only three tracks, this is classic Schulze. Effectively it is a three movement piece that highlights the progression of the genre and his own musical style, charting the past "Sequenzer (from 70 to 7)", the present day "Euro Caravan" and into the future with the thirty minute "Thor (Thunder)." Housed in a high class digi pack.

Two long soundscapes of dark, ethereal and improvisational synthesizer music that begs to be listened to on headphones. This is far from bland New Age Music but real head-fucking electronic weirdness.Includes a 33 minute bonus track and detailed booklet housed in a 3 fold digi pack..

Klaus Schulze - Trance Appeal. CD. (SPV - SPV78822) 1996 album, originally released under the ‘Klaus Schulze’s Wahnfried’ project name and quite possibly the best of the series. Although still in the style of classic Schulze, it is very much a collaborative effort. The tracks are notably much shorter compositions than you would expect from Klaus, the number of songs on this album reaching double figures when most of us would expect no more than four. Magnum - Livin' The Dream. dbl DVD. (SPV - SPV997777) Excellent double PAL DVD released in 2005, celebrating 30 years of Magnum mania and the continued success of one of the most important bands in the melodic hard rock genre. Disc 1 was filmed at London Astoria (your correspondent was there) on that special evening that commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 'On A Storyteller's Night' album by playing it in its entirety alongside a set of classics from 'Back Street Kid' to 'Soldier Of The Line' and 'Kingdom Of Madness' (although the rejigged 'Sacred Hour' remains a discussion point for fans everywhere). Disc Two features several promo videos from 1985 to 1990, an acoustic track, a 'View From The Queue', a road diary, sluidshow and several rehearsals. The only downside is the absence of drummer Gary "Arry"James (also of Thunder) on the live material- but it's still a splendid package no matter what. We're all livin' under the same old sky.

Manowar - Hail To England. CD. (SPV - SPV08185500) Third album from sword-wielding, loincloth and codpiece clad, and not in the slightest bit in any way homoerotic Gods Of True Metal. Wooaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhh. Features 'Blood of My Enemies' and 'Each Dawn I Die'- considered by many to be their finest. Silver edition with deluxe packaging and 16 page booklet (probably) made out of solid steel and the guts of small furry animals. Or, more realistically, glossy paper.

Like some kind of Flat Earth Society that denies any developments in music after 'Kill Em All' ever took place, you nevertheless still have to love and respect Manowar. Monster Magnet - Tab. CD. (SPV - SPV99652) About bloody time too!! Wyndorf and Co's first slice of prime fuzzadelic stoner sludge space metaaal, recorded at the same time as their debut full-length mantelpiece 'Spine Of God' (although this so-called EP is actually just as long). Although little more than a series of extended space jams (like that ever stopped the first four Hawkwind albums from being good) smeared in layers of fuzz guitar and flanged vocal, the album nevertheless dispays the roots of everything that would help the Magnet flower into one of the 90s and 00s premier hard rock acts. It WAS a Satanic drug thing, and quite clearly, 'they' didn't understand. Includes one previously unreleased bonus track.

Novalis - Novalis. CD. (SPV - SPV49522) Official re-issue of another progressive rock monster from the German band. Initially released in 1975, this richly textured mixture of classical elements, poetry and twin lead guitars and banks of keyboards was also unusual in that the vocals were in German. A classic album and now housed in a digi pack with fully expanded booklet.

On Trial - Head Entrance. CD. (SPV - SPV 085 45942) Back in stock! Danish acid psych with awesome guitar extrapolations and a KILLER cover version of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators classic 'Slip Inside This House'. (This really is the best version ever... reeking of dope smoke and shot through with audio hallucinations and drug induced mystical exstacy). The band sound in places like Monster Magnet, but they are much more psychedelic, with backwards guitar freakouts and druggy lyrics.... GREAT! Os Mundi - 43 Minuten. CD. (SPV - SPV49512) 1972 album from this bunch of progressive Kraut rockers known for their classic "Latin Mass". A diverse yet seamless album with a keyboard/sax led sound on some tracks plus particularly tasty lead guitar. Cello and flute are also used to great effect and the album as a whole blends together wonderfully. They don't make 'em like this anymore (unfortunately)Housed in a digi sleeve re-creating the original artwork.

Paatos - Silence Of Another Kind. CD. (SPV - SPV48962) The third album by this unique and new Svedish band, fronted by the charismatic (for which read 'phwoaarrr') frontwoman Petronella Nettermalm. They themselves describe their music as 'melancholic post rock' with the influences of Bjork, Can, King Crimson and Portishead- and that can't be no bad fing!! Somewhat heavier than both its predecssors, and similar in some places to The Gathering, Madder Mortem or a female fronted Opeth, but unique in delivery. Interesting- in fact, new band of the month.

Pallas - The Sentinal - The Artwork Collector's Series. CD. (SPV - SPV08731998) Much acclaimed debut album from Scottish prog masters, Pallas, this genre-defining release began a trend that would later be followed by Dream Theater and others. Popol Vuh - Affenstunde. CD. (SPV - SPV08570102) The debut album from 1971 by this legendary German group who were pioneers in blending electronic muisc with ethnic sounds and trippy psychedelia. This first album is a wonderful album loaded with moogs, ethnic percussion and waves of cosmic sound. Recommended! Popol Vuh - Aguirre. CD. (SPV - SPV08570142) First proper and correct reissue of Popol Vuh's 6th album which was the sound track to the Herzog film Aguirre (about the famous conquistador's doomed Amazonian expedition) and the music is suitably eerie and primal, loaded with Mellotrons. Housed in a beautiful digipack with an extensive, detailed booklet and the missing 7 minute track "Aguirre III". In many ways this is a soundtrack and film similar to the equally dark Apocalypse Now.

Popol Vuh - Bruder Des Schattens - Sohne Des Lights. CD. (SPV - SPV70212) 1978 four track album from the German pioneers of electronica, re-issued in a high quality digi pack with bonus track "Sing, For Song Drives Away The Wolves" and extensive liner notes. Already eight years into their career Popul Vuh (led by Florian Fricke) were well into their stride of creating calming ambient synth music. Popol Vuh - Coeur De Vere (Soundtrack). CD. (SPV - SPV08570182) Incredible soundtrack to an incredible Werner Herzog film, by an equally incredible band, although Popol Vuh was really just one man- Florian Fricke, one of the seminal names in German electronic music. Not to discount the guitar work of Daniel Fischelscher, who on this album excels himself with a range of textures not often wrung from the six-string sword. As usual, sloth and evocation of mood is the order of the day, as the trance-like drone mantras build up around the listener. And that lucky listener also gets a high quality digipak with bonus tracks, a special booklet detailing Popol's soundtrack work, and extensive liner notes with more information than previously available.. Quill - In Triumph. CD. (SPV - SPV99832) Fifth album from Swedish progressive metal monsters, produced by noted UFO/Helloween producer Tommy Newton. Featuring their most asskicking material so far (it sez here) redolent of Purple, Zeppelin and even Audioslave in its psychedelia-flavoured swirl of sound and heaviness, this might well be their best yet. Then again, don't they always say that?

Quill (Swe) - Voodoo Caravan. CD. (SPV - 085-72572) New Swedish quartet who play a fine brand of druggy metallic heavy rock with a serious groove. The term 'stoner rock' tends to be over-used, but you could certainly get stoned to this and it rocks so what's the problem ? Check this out if you like Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age or Fu Manchu. Plenty of power, riffing and energy.

Roine Stolt - Hydrophonia. CD. (SPV - IOMCD 047) 1997 solo album from the Flower King himself. This largely instrumental offering features ten different interpretations on the theme of water and includes some of Roine's best guitar work. In parts both progressive and psychedelic, this more than lives up to expectations and comes highly recommended.

Saxon - Dogs Of War. CD. (SPV - SPV74112) Specially priced repackaged edition of a strong 1990s album from Biff and the Barnsley Metal Militia. Now repackaged with two live bonus tracks, brand new liner notes from the Biffster and unseen photos. The track 'The Great White Buffalo' is not a cover of the Ted Nugent/Amboy Dukes track, by the way.

Scorpions - Lonesome Crow. CD. (SPV - SPV49562) Like UFO, German band the Scorpions went on to make MOR heavy metal anthems, but also like UFO the bands first two albums are amazing. This is the first from 1971 and the twin lead guitars give the album a hard edged psychedelic sound with flashes of space rock and inventive experimentation similar to Eloy and Guru Guru. A great album and housed in a tasteful digi sleeve with original artwork.

Sepultura - Dante XXI. CD. (SPV - SPV99812) Those Sepultura chaps just keep on rocking- in ever more inventive and uncompromising ways than before. After all, who else but a band that clearly don't give a shit for commercial considerations would release, on their 20th anniversary as a recording act, a concept album based on Dante's Divine Comedy? Generally, thrash metal and great literature haven't always been bedfellows- but then again, when did the Seps ever adhere to any rules? If they hadn't broken most of 'em, half of what we know as metal in the last fifteen years would never have happened!! Even more accomplished than 2004's superb 'Roorback' , this is the sound of a band who move ever forward.

Shawn Phillips - No Category. CD. (SPV - SPV08570972) 2003 release from the man who co-wrote "Season of the Witch" & "Sunshine Superman".Once again the album is filled with his beautiful multi octave singing voice and features guest musicians Leland Sklar, Ralph Humphrey (F.Zappa) and Mike Mille (Chick Corea).

Skinny Puppy - The Greater Wrong Of The Right- Live. dbl DVD. (SPV - SPV55863847) A real treat for goth and industrial types everywhere- the full incendiary, pounding, clanking, screeching live experience that was Skinny Puppy live on their comeback North American tour of 2004. Mixed in 5:1 dobly surround onto two, Region 0 PAL discs, we get the full megillah- not only a full 21-song set stretching back across a 20 year career, but a tour log from waaay back in 1988 (shortly before mainmen cEvin Cey and Nivek Ogre began 'not talking to each other'), archive footage of vintage performances filmed by horror supremo Jim Van Bebber (YAAY!) and William Morris' uber-controversial documentary. Steve Howe - Spectrum. CD. Steve's band includes King Crimson bassist/stick plucker Tony Levin, keyboardist Oliver Wakeman (son of you-know-who) and his own sons Dylan and Virgil on drums and moog synthesizer respectively. Tommy Bolin - Whips And Roses. CD. (SPV - SPV78582) 10-track retrospective of this fine guitarist, just one of many (Kossoff, Rhoads, Vaughan etc) who flared brighty and sadly died before their time. As well as playing for the James Gang and ultimately Deep Purple, Bolin recorded two fine solo albums 'Teaser' and 'Private Eyes' both of which showed his incredible talent as a guitarist, composer and singer. All the tracks on this compilation, however, are either alternate versions or unreleased songs from studio sessions- so you get your value for money. Virtually all of the performers are the spiritual children of the Who. Eddie Vedder brought his usual passion to good versions of "I’m One" and "Let’s See Action". Kelly Jones from Stereophonics contributed a nice arrogance and attitude for "Substitute", and Noel Gallagher’s guitar work helped create a solid version of "Won’t Get Fooled Again".
