Eric Andersen - 'Bout Changes And Things. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79206)

The second album (originally released 1965) from this popular US folksmith, featuring just vocal, acoustic guitar and harmonica. There was, as some of you might know, an electric version ('Bout Changes And Things Take Two') recorded some years later at the height of the folk rock boom, but for collectors this is the one to search out- which is why this midprice CD reissue is so welcome. Superb.

Eric Andersen - Violets Of Dawn. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79539)

18-track CD compilation of the best of Andersen's recordings for the Vanguard label in the early-mid 60s. A contemporary of Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot and of course Dylan, but of a less political and more romantic bent (oo-er) This may have been something to do with the fact that he was better-looking than any of them, and got laid more!! Includes two rare album tracks never released on album before except for the various artists compilation 'The Original New Folks'. All 16 of the others are taken from his excellent Vanguard output.

Ian & Sylvia - Nashville. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79284)

Eleven track album from the Canadian duo. As ever these folk pioneers are gloriously simple and straightforward in their approach, making their music sound as fresh as it did then. Deservedly one of the most popular acts on the US Folk scene. First released in 1968, at the same time when many rock artists would often travel to Nashville to record, you can hear evidence of people like Neil Young listening in and taking note. Eleven tracks, including: "Ballad Of The Ugly Man", Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn", "House Of Cards" and "Farewell To The North.

Ian Tyson - Cowboyography. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79474)

This album was originally released in 1987 and continued the return to music Tyson had made after his eponymous solo debut with Ricky Skaggs in 1984.- which in itself was his firstrecording for some ten or twelve years since the dissolution of his partnership (both musical and personal) with Sylvia Fricker. The 11 songs featured here were all self-penned and reflected the everyday concerns of the Canadian cowboy: platinum on release, this edition is now available at midprice.

Includes a reworking of the classic 'Four Strong Winds' tat he recorded originally as a member of Ian and Sylvia. Mid price!!

Ian Tyson - Lost Herd. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD79533)

Originally released in 1999, this is another fine release from Canada's No 1 country star and genuine cowboy, Ian Tyson. Includes mainly original compositions but with the obligatory slightly odd cover version thrown in for good measure- this time, a spirited and obviously lonseome rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.

Jim Kweskin & The Jug Band - Acoustic Swing & Jug. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79521)

Twenty track collection of Jim's greatest hits, compiled from their three early '60's Vanguard releases. A healthy dose of irony and some great (kazoo) playing helped mark out this group as a fun time, inventive folk band and set them apart from the traditional / pop folk scenes of the time. Includes: "Memphis", "Wild About My Loivng", "That's When I'll Come Bvack To You" and "Richland Woman."

The third Vanguard release from Kweskin's Jug Band, an influential US folk revivalist lineup that included Geoff Muldaur, Maria D'Amato, (later to be known as, of course, Maria Muldaur of "Midnight At The Oasis" fame) and ex-Bill Monroe banjoist Bill Keith. Oh, a mighty wind's a blowin'. . .

John Hammond - John Hammond. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 2148)

A stone classic of music, regardless of genre. This was the very first release from John Hammond Jr from the Vanguard label in 1962, and is one of the rawest artefacts of unaccompanied folk blues ever laid down by a white man. The compositions of Hammond's heroes- Arthur Crudup, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters, Son House and others- some of whom were discovered and nurtured by Hammond's father- are given a stark, haunting treatment of such maturity it's hard to believe that he was only in his early twenties at the time. Available at a midprice one simply cannot refuse.

John Hammond - So Many Roads. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD79178)

Midprice reissue of this 1965 album of blues covers from John Hammond Jr, the son of the man who discovered Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and some of the key figures in American music. Whilst he may oddly live in the shadow of his non-recording father, John's own achievements are noteworthy: his Vanguard albums were often a training ground for some of the cream of America's next generation of rock musicians, such as this one which features Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of the then embryonic Band, plus Charlie Musselwhite and Mike Bloomfield.

John Hammond - Solo. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79380)

A mid-price release for John Hammond Jr's 1976 album. Recorded live in Vanguard's 23rd Street studio in New York and produced by Label founder Maynard Solomon. Always preferring to interpret other writers' songs than compose himself, here Hammond performs tracks by Elmore James, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters, among others.

Judy Roderick - Woman Blue. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79197)

First European CD issue of the first Vanguard album (and one of only three official recordings made in her tragically short lifetime) from the first of America's new generation of white blueswomen, often regarded as the US counterpart to Jo Ann Kelly, who was the same age and who strangely died in the 90s around the same time. The seamless and effortless way in which folk, blues and jazz blended together on this album influenced everyone from Pentangle to Janis Joplin. Only 22 years old at the time of recording, Judy's voice was already fully matured and is a joy to behold in its remastered form. This disc also adds four bonus tracks that have never been previously released. An essential purchase.

Liam Clancy - Liam Clancy. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 79169)

Fourteen track debut solo album from one of the finest singers of folk ballads (and that's according to Bob Dylan.) You can't really call this anything but a true solo album, it features a guest vocal from Luke Kelly, wonderfully soft vocals and acoustic guitar from Liam himself and that's it! This ultra sparce arrangement lets the songs do the hard work, (very gently) grabbing the audience by the ears and not letting go until the last note. A fine album of Irish folk originals and the odd cover of tracks by MacColl, Peter Shephard and Bob Dylans' "The Patriot Game." The perfect highlight of a great folk artist.

Odetta - One Grain Of Sand. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD 2153)

A midprice release of one of the most unique albums of the early 60s US folk boom, which was originally released on vinyl in 1963 and has been hard to find for some time. Originally trained as an opera singer (an oddity itself for a black artist), Odetta threw over the 'orthodox' musical life after visiting a folk-based coffee house in San Fransisco, and was a major part, alongside Pete Seeger, of the embryonic Geeenwich Vllage scene. This was her first album, and shows her unusual finger-based guitar style (which influenced Nick Drake) and peerless vocal on a mixture of original compositions (radical at the time) and traditional melodies. Accompanied only by the upright bass of Bill Lee, this is American folk at one of its most outstanding peaks.

Paul Robeson - At Carnegie Hall. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD720202)

The legendary singer, actor and civil rights activist captured live at Carnegie Hall in 1958, at the age of 60. This concert was famous for the fact that Robeson announced to the cheering audience that his passport had been returned to him after having been revoked for eight years, after he refused to sign an affidavit denying that he was a communist. Released with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes that give an invaluable insight into what Robeson’s music meant in the context of the time.
