Diamond Head - Evil Live. Dble CD. (Castle - CMDDD240)

The National Bowl in 1993 was the venue for this majestic live performance by mainstays Sean Harris and Brian Tatler, plus new recruits Karl Wilcox and Pete Vuckovic. While the first CD concentrates on their stage anthems, the second includes some classic covers culled from Head heroes such as Bad Company and Montrose.

Mott The Hoople - Family Anthology. Dble CD. (Angel Air - SJPCD196)

Fascinating double disc set covering the far-reaching branches of the Mott family tree, from obvious connections like Hunter-Ronson and Bad Company to The Rats, The Doc Thomas Group, Silence, Les Norman & The Buddies (pre-Mott beat combos featuring Ralphs, Watts and Griffin) British Lions, the Ariel Bender and Verden Allen bands, and John Fiddler- although sadly no London or Steve Hyams. It's incredible to see how far Mott's influence has spread over the last thirty years- now one can see what made it possible. Also featured is Ralpher's original demo of 'Can't Get Enough' the song that caused him to leave and form Bad Company, several live renditions of Mott tunes hitherto unreleased (including the never-before- heard 'Can You Sing The Song That I Sing' and 'Chosen Road') and an informative 28 page booklet by Mott fanzine editor Keith Smith (not the jazz trumpeter/actor) and an introduction from Buff himself. It's a mighty long way down rock and roll. . .

Paul Kossoff - Best Of. CD. (Track Records - TRA1034)

Paul Kossoff gave us his mastery of the understated and his frighteningly expressive vibrato initially with Free whom he co-formed in1968 with Simon Kirke (later of Bad Company) and then his solo project Back Street Crawler followed by the band of the same name. He should be regarded in the same league as Clapton, Hendrix and Beck. Sadly Paul passed away in 1976 aged 25. This compilation puts the best of his work on one disc.(and alternate versions). The cover photo is a Gered Mankowitz classic and the album jacket also contains exclusive photos provided by David Kossoff his Father and sleeve notes written by the Free Fan Club founder.

Queen & Paul Rodgers - Live - Return Of The Champions. CD. (EMI - 336 9792)

Following their hugely successful 32 date European Arena tour, Queen + Paul Rodgers now release a double CD capturing the "magic" of their performance. Featured alongside some of the most famous Queen songs ('Tie Your Mother Down' 'I Want It All' 'Fat Bottomed Girls' etc) are Bad Company & Free classics such as 'All Right Now' 'Wishing Well' & 'Can’t Get Enough'. The package features a 16 page booklet with photographs taken by fans throughout the tour. Brian May and Roger Taylor also contribute lead vocals to several tracks, and despite the continued absence of John Deacon, they do a fine job of keeping the spirit of Queen alive- and the spirit of Freddie, which still looms large, as it should do, in every note.

Ruby Turner - Suspicious Again- The Indigo Sessions. Dble CD. (Castle - CMDDD1220)

Double CD reissue of two excellent albums made by Ruby (the UK's premier traditional soul'n'blues diva, to those who don't know) in 1996 and 1998 respectively for Indigo Records. On the first, the backing musicians included the Norma Beaker Band, with a guest appearance from Jools Holland, and the material ranges from standards ('Wang Dang Doodle' 'Ain't Nobody' 'A Rockin' Good Way') to more contemporary blues and soul material: on the second she is backed by an all-star lineup of Bobby Tench (Jeff Beck Group), Zoot Money, Boz Burrell (King Crimson/ Bad Company) and Stan Webb (Chicken Shack) and features nine of her own compositions. Not bad for someone whose career first took off as a backing singer for dodgy 80s pop acts!!

Steeleye Span - Rocket Cottage. CD. (B.G.O. Records - CD318)

1976 album. Tracks: London; The Bosnian Hornpipes; Orfeo; Nathan's Reel; The Twelve Witches; The Brown Girl; Fighting For Strangers; Sligo Maid; Sir James The Rose; The Drunkard. The Span were by this time feeling punk snap at their heels, but whereas most bands of their era dithered and dallied, they just plunged head first into the tradition they were so fond of, and delivered another exceptionally fine album.Trivia point: similar to Bad Company's "Burnin Sky" in that it features a hidden track consisting of the band singing covers drunkenly in the studio!!

White Spirit - White Spirit. Dble CD. (Castle - CMEDD1143)

This legendary British heavy rock album was overlooked at the time, but later cited by Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine, Tom G Warrior and most of the next generation's Metal Gods as a major influence. Actually formed some time before the NWOBHM kicked in, but toiling away quietly in a corner of the North East during the Punk Wars, one can see the difference the extra few years made- rather than bludgeon the listener with obvious Priest, Sabbath and Motorhead influences, the Spirit lads, whose sound was made distinctive in the 'Nobwob' by the use of keyboardist Michael Pearson, chose Purple and Heep as their mentors. Thus whilst everything here is undoubtedly heavy, there is a progressive tinge that sets the band apart from their contemporaries. This double disc set brings together everything they recorded between 1977 and 1982- the seven track album originally released on Neat, plus singles, alternative versions, b-sides and a whole disc of demos, some of which date from their later period featuring Brian Howe (the man who fronted Bad Company between 1985 and 1994) on vocals instead of original frontman Bruce Ruff. Of course, the Spirit's most noted member is one Janick Gers, later of Gillan, Paul Dianno's Battlezone, Fish and eventually Iron Maiden, wherein he still resides today. Now, for the first time ever on CD, we can hear not only his widdlng talents but some damn fine tunes such as 'Midnight Chaser' and 'Way Of The Kings'.
