(Black Rose Records - BR179) CD re-issue of the 1971 live album recorded at the Melbourne town hall by this act who were fronted by Billy Thorpe.This live album was a big hit in their native land and very much of the times.It contains 4 tracks the shortest being a rousing version of "Be-Bop-A-Lula" which is 5 minutes while the 11 minute "Somebody Left Me Crying" contains great guitar work,but the icing on the Cake is the 20 minute "Momma" in 2 parts and a mammoth drum solo! Burnt Noodle - The Noodle And The Damage Done. CD. 90s US psychedelia with a definite musical feel of Phish, while vocally it resembles the band Cake. Alternately spacey and intense then, this is a fine debut album that will appeal to all fans of trip-rock. Questionable Neil Young pun should probably be ignored.

Butthole Surfers - Weird Revolution. LP. 2002 album from Texan weirdos Butthole Surfers is heavy on the industrial dance tip, blending power-tool effects with cheesy, washed-out beats all psyched-up in traditional Butthole style. Sounds like Cake jamming with MC 900 ft Jesus. Limited edition in clear vinyl.

David Cross - Exiles. CD. (Red Hot (Music Galore) - CDR109) 2005-released solo album from the elusive and reclusive former King Crimson violinist, featuring guest appearances from Robert Fripp (on three tracks), John Wetton and Peter Hammill among others. The title track is of course a reworking of the Crimson classic first aired on 'Lark's Tongues In Aspic' - for some the definitive song of the Wetton era, conjuring up perfectly the atmospheres of isolation, edginess and horror, mixed with melodies of rustic beauty, that the Crims specialised in. Cross's violin and viola playing was a key element in creating that sound and it has the same effect here on his own compositions- 'Troppo' (with Hammill on vocals) 'This Is Your Life' (written by lyricist/ producer Pete Sinfield) and the deliberately askew sound of 'Cakes' are every bit as disquieting and engaging as anything he played on in the 70s. October's release of the month.

Dexter Gordon - Classic Blue Note Recordings. Dble CD. (Blue Note - 5806582) Nineteen track collection of the best Dexter Gordon tracks from his Blue Note era in the early '60's. His initial success in the mid '40's petered out after drug problems and some time in jail. The comeback albums he made for the label have been considered the best of his entire career. Includes: "Cheese Cake", "it's You Or No One", "I'm A Fool To Want You" and "Second Balcony Jump."

Merrilee Rush (And The Turnabouts) - Angel Of The Morning- The Complete Bell Recordings. CD. (Rev Ola - CRREV143) Activist in Seattle Women in Rhythm & Blues; a member of the Northwest Hall Of Fame (which puts her on a par with the mighty Kingsmen and Sonics!); maker of one of THE classic hit singles - a radio staple ever since, and a front runner in the Memphis pop explosion which led to famous Soul factory American Studios producing The Box Tops, a whole slew of singles for Eternity's Children, 'Dusty In Memphis' and this classic collection of popsoulfolkrock recordings on Bell Records (check out the songwriter credits on the right!) - you’d be right in thinking Merilee Rush is nothing short of a legend! A huge live draw in their native Northwest, Merrilee and her band The Turnabouts were on tour in 1967 with their local superstar friends Paul Revere and The Raiders, who like Elvis and Dusty Springfield had been intrigued by the Soul and Pop masterpieces emanating from American Studios and decided to make an album there with the crack team of writers / producers / musicians. They recommended Merrilee to the legendary studio boss, Chips Moman, who asked her to record a version of ‘Angel Of The Morning’, the Chip Taylor future classic. When released as a single, it became a monster hit and there followed a whole load of great material on Bell Records (not to be confused with the Seventies glam label of the same name), with that classic American Studios sound to the fore, and Merrilee's voice - owing as much to Evie Sands and Jackie De Shannon as it did to her own unique take on the songs -was the icing on the Cake, as Folkrock met Soulpop! At last, here are the complete Bell recordings, including the rare Quincy Jones produced take on 'What the World Needs Now' and Merrilee's amazing trippy version of the Motown classic 'Reach Out...I'll Be There'; apparently inspired by hearing Vanilla Fudge's overhaul of 'You Keep Me Hanging On', on the car radio one rainy night on tour - an amazing slice of Memphis pop Soul with a twist!!

Sharing the same psych leanings as OTC but favouring psychedelic pop sensibilities and the odd country reference ahead of the experimentation associated with the band. Also features members of Montreal and JapanCakes.

Super Breaks Vol 3 - Various. CD. (BGP - CDBGPD 145) First two volumes have sold like hot Cakes. An essential breaks and samples record for DJ's and producers. Many old school cut ups that are ripe for a funky set. Funk, Jazz and Soul are all represented from a multi tude of artists. Features Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone, Freddie Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Coasters.

Swell Maps - A Trip To Marineville. Dble LP + 7". (Munster Records - MR270) Utter genius from Leamington Spa-based art punk auteurs, fronted by the enigmatic Nikki Sudden (who oversaw this release) and his anarchic, intuitive drumming brother Epic Soundtracks (no, of course it wasn't his real name). Limited edition (1000 copies): contains 180 gram heavy vinyl pressing with tracks added from the sessions that didn't make the original 1979 cut, additional inner jackets with notes from Mr Sudden himself, plus a reproduction of the legendary free 7" EP that includes 'Loin Of The Surf' and 'Doctor At Cake'. Alongside Wire, The Fall, Family Fodder and the Soft Boys, the Maps were the most out-there and psychedelic of all punk and New Wave acts, with a cut-up, "what does this button do" attitude to music that baffled many and inspired many more (Pavement, Sonic Youth, The Wedding Present and Blur are all devotees) Obviously influenced by art-school prog and Krautrock (hence the Can-referencing 'Don't Throw Ashtrays At Me') but equally by Joe Meek, Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, Marc Bolan, local hero Edgar Broughton, This Heat, Beefheart and Zappa, the Maps quite literally ripped up the conventional songwriting rulebook and flung it from a very high Warwickshire window. Hence 'Vertical Slum' 'Midget Submarines' 'Full Moon In My Pocket' and the sublimely titled 'Adventuring Into Basketry'- all lessons in how to make beauty out of absurdity and sheer nonsense. Difficult to believe then, that these (Sudden and Soundtracks) were the same people who a few years later would resurface as The Jacobites and invent the shamelessly retro gypsy-ragamuffin-Stonesy-glam/sleaze style that proliferated throughout Brummie rock in the 80s, ultimately giving birth to the Dogs D'Amour. But in the world of the Maps, nothing makes sense. . .Release of the year (2005) so far!!

Swell Maps - Jane From Occupied Europe. Dble LP. (Munster Records - MR271) Second and final studio album from revered Midlands post- punk experimentalists, led by Nikki Sudden and his brother Epic Soundtracks, the most unconventional percussionist since Maureen Tucker or Bill Bruford. Heavy double vinyl (180 grams per disc) reissue with liner notes, gatefold jacket and bonus tracks not included on the original 1980 LP. Some catualluy prefer this to the debut: certainly, 'Let's Buy A Bridge' 'Cake Shop Girl' 'Mining Villages' and 'Collision With A Frogman Vs The Mangrove Delta Plan' are some of the best tracks recorded by any band of that era. Members later turned up in Crime And The City Solution, Television Personalities and of course The Jacobites/Bounty Hunters, whose Dylan-Stones sound and Mott/Dolls/Faces sleazy image was a million miles from the sheer unbridled lunacy and unorthodoxy of a band like this.Those of you who have never heard this album really should.
