Chico Hamilton Quintet & Fred Katz - Classical Katz. CD.

Chico Hamilton Quintet with cellist Fred Katz were the leading practitioners of chamber jazz, devoted to a mid-century blend of classical and jazz music that called itself third stream. This is the entire, highly regarded album "Zen" by Katz where he is backed by Hamilton and the Quintet along with the highlights of the Quintet's own 1956 set. Both albums are highly sought after and long out of print. This Hamilton-Katz line-up would feature famously the following year (1957) in the Burt Lancaster-Tony Curtis film "The Sweet Smell Of Success"; a great cinematic moment in jazz.

Gerry Mulligan Quartet (feat Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Chico H - On The Road. Dble CD. (Giant Step Records - GSCR15)

One of the true giants of modern jazz (definitely THE giant of the baritone saxophone) and the leader of one of the most innovative quartets of all time captured live at the peak of his powers. This excellently compiled CD covers three distinct eras. The first nine tracks are from the original, radical piano-less quartet, where Mulligan first joined forces with charismatic trumpeter Chet Baker, the unusual bassist Carson Smith and drummer Chico Hamilton (who would himself soon go off to lead one of the most innovative combos in jazz history, simultaneously popularising both free jazz and lounge music with one classic debut album) By 1953, the drummer had been replaced by Larry Bunker, and the quartet augmented by altoist Lee Konitz: he plays on six of Disc 1's remaining 11 tracks. Disc 2 features the baritonist reunited with Hamilton once more whilst Baker, by now a huge international star even outside of jazz, had been replaced by the fiery Jon Eardley and bass duties were now supplied by the excellent Red Mitchell. Tracks were recorded at the Haig (their regular Hollywood club) the Black Hawk, and two prominent Californian high schools, and the compilation is by the noted expert Roy Carr. Timeless, beautiful jazz.

Gerry Mulligan Quartet W/Chet Baker - Jeru. CD. (Sanctuary Classics - CDAJA5612)

An absolute must for anyone who knows the beauty of jazz, or wants to become acquainted with it. Baritonist Gerry Mulligan (still untouched as a soloist in the history of that instrument) was, alongside Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, possibly the most influential white bebopper of his generation, having worked in both the 'cool school' bands of Kenton and Herman that gave birth to the West Coast sound, and the more 'progressive' bands in the East (for which read: New York) in particular Miles Davis' Birth Of The Cool nonet. In 1952 he made jazz history again when he formed this revolutionary quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker, bassist Carson Smith and drummer Chico Hamilton (although the rhythm section soon became fairly interchangeable) - the first small group ever in jazz never to have a chordal (ie guitar or piano) instrument. Collected here on this 78-minute CD are the cream of their recordings (although sadly 'Cherry' appears to have been left off) such as 'Lullaby Of The Leaves' 'Line For Lyons' 'Walkin Shoes' 'Makin Whoopee' and 'Bark For Barksdale' and 'Frenesi'- all of which are part of the very backbone of 'cool jazz', and show the harmonic and rhythmic complexities of bebop, but always pay homage to their Swing and Dixieland roots. 27 tracks in all, the largest ever CD compilation of classic Mulligan hitherto available, and all for eight of your earth pounds. Put simply, if you don't like this, you don't like jazz!! Timeless and beautiful.

Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves The Sunshine. Dble CD. (Atom Music - ATOM2014)

'The Godfather Of The Vibraphone', as he is affectionately known by his legion of fans began his recording career with the respected saxophonist/flautist Curtis Amy, then progressed further with Chico Hamilton, Gerald Wilson and Hampton Hawes. He moved to New York in 1970, which is where he began to show acceptance of rock and r&b into his playing style, he began moving away from his traditional jazz approach, he also absorbed the funk and seventies disco influences which resulted in far more commercial acceptance, but to the dismay of his original jazz purist fan base. Subsequently, his 1977 album 'Lifeline', which included the classic jazz/disco track 'Running Away' and the follow up album, 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine', both hit the US album charts marking his commercial peak.
