Happy Mondays - Related / Similar Products and Compilation Appearances

Can - Tago Mago. CD. (Mute - CDSPOON6/7)

Third official Can album (originally released in 1970) and the second to feature the insane babblings of Damo Suzuki, a Japanese man fronting a German band singing in English but seemingly fluent only in the lexicon of the Planet Wibble. A double vinyl set at the time of release, this was the album that contained the relentless 20-minute funk of 'Halleluwah' (later copied wholesale by Happy Mondays), the equally long and actually rather frightening tape loop collage that is 'Aumgn', the screeching, gibbering 'Peking O' the sparse garage punk thud of 'Mushroom' and the Link Wray-backwards-through-a mincer clatter of 'Oh Yeah' - all of which have now been sampled to death by every fucker from Hoxton to Moss Side, but that doesn't make them any less classic. Hybrid SACD edition, remastered from original masters, featuring new sleevenotes, original artwork and photos. Will play on SACD players and compatible DVD players.

John Kongos - Tokoloshe Man. CD. (See For Miles - SEE CD 221-A)

Great funky rock from this South African hit maker who ended up being covered by Happy Mondays.

King Of The Slums - Blowzy Weirdos. CD. (Cherry Red - CDBRED 93)

1991 album from Madchester scenesters. Often likened to the Stone Roses, they were more like a cross between Happy Mondays and Charlatans - poppy and dancey but with a real sneer. This album finds them just on the verge of breaking big - of course they split up soon after in true Madchester style leaving them in the annals of rock n roll obscurity.

Zero- A Martin Hannett Story 1977-91 - Various Artists. CD. (Big Beat - CDWIKD270)

One of the most prestigious compilations ever, a tribute to the late great Martin Hannett, the man who more than any other producer established the sound of the immediate post-punk era. The Man Who Was Manchester produced every important post-punk band that emerged from the city's depths (apart from the Smiths) - the Buzzcocks, Magazine, John Cooper Clarke, Jilted John (aka John Shuttleworth) Joy Division, New Order, Durutti Column, Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, almost all of whom are included here. He also did OK with some right Southern nancies as well- the Psychedelic Furs, Kitchens Of Distinction and the Only Ones all felt his golden touch, not to mention giants such as like Nico and U2 (well, OK, not too sure about the second one). Everything from punk to New Romantic to dance music is here, and it's a mark of the man that his name is associated with the records as much as those of the bands themselves. Ace's first 80s compilation, given the full treatment with liner notes from James Nice and large quantities of memorabilia.
