A 2006 solo CD by Acid Mothers Temple Mastermind Kawabata Makoto. 3 tracks full of modulated analogue synthesizer sound that lead to spacious and hypnotic improvisations. Alan Parsons - Best Of. Dble CD. (Proper - PLATBX5901)

Double disc compilation from this highly underrated composer, bandleader, writer and (more recently) performer. The pirate AND the drivetime DJ's favourite, Mr Parsons (who stands at just under 7 ft tall- seriously) has been since 1975 the Mastermind behind a series of highly literate and well-crafted concept albums from the more 'pop' end of the prog spectrum, with guest vocalists that have included Colin Blunstone, Arthur Brown, Elmer Gantry, John Miles and Steve Harley - alongside his regulars Eric Woolfson and Lenny Zakatek. This compilation consists of two discs- first, a live recording from 1994 (the first time he had ever toured) stacked with hits such as 'Old And Wise' 'Prime Time' 'The Raven' 'Don't Answer Me' 'Eye In The Sky' etc, and secondly a remastered version of the hard to find 1994 studio album 'On Air' which features (among others) 10cc 's Eric Stewart, and includes bonus tracks.

Blag Dahlia - Nina And Other Delights. CD. (Mvd Audio - MVD0504CD)

Perhaps the most audatious spoken word album ever, from the Mastermind behind the Dwarves. A lounge backing guides him through his demented views; extracts from his new novel Nina and from his "How To Write Good" column as well as improvisations. Barmy, addictive and warped. Thirteen tracks including: "Cocaine2, "Invisible Ink Intro", "This Old Wore" and "Christ Comes Back."

Crazy People - Bedlam. LP. (Gear Fab Records - GFC 404)

This 1968 exploito psych release has always been shrouded in mystery - we can now reveal that UK bandleader and instrumentalist Johnny Kitchen was the Mastermind behind this album. Largely recorded in Canada, and featuring a very odd mixture of samples and radio jingles mixed with the over the top garage psych-rock, it's an interesting release with some very psychedelic passages. Weird and wired ! 180 gram vinyl release in thick card sleeve.

Danny & The Nightmares - Freak Brain. CD. (Sympathy - SFTRI762CD)

Legendary songwriter / artist Daniel Johnston and his horror-rock combo The Nightmares are back from the grave to deliver this 2005 album. 'Freak Brain' was produced by Jesus Christ and was recorded on a 4-track machine in a real haunted house somewhere in Texas. Johnston, notorious spook, warped Mastermind, and the subject of a current award-winning documentary, again teams up with his two nightmare friends to create an album unlike anything you’ve heard from Daniel before. Twelve unreleased songs inspired by love, hell-chicks, holidays and of course the death of Satan. This album finds Daniel playing electric guitar and bass, with Jason playing improvised guitar and farfisa organ and Bridget keeping time. All Rock’n’Roll, no bullshit. For those who have always wanted to hear a true Garage Rock’n’Roll album by Daniel Johnston, here it is.

Denim - Back In Denim. CD. (West Midlands Records - BRUM3CD)

Denim was the brainchild of Lawrence who had spent the previous decade as the singer, songwriter and Mastermind behind that ultimate independent rock band, Felt. Having achieved his goal of releasing 10 albums and 10 singles in 10 years during the courseof the eighties, Lawrence disbanded Felt and relocated to New York. It was there that Lawrence translated his homesick thoughts from abroad into the series of songs that made up Back In Denim. Over in New York he wrote as he reminisced about his West Midlands childhood, flares, chopper bikes, tower blocks, stringy beards, hippies, skinheads and the IRA’s pub bombings in Birmingham. He set this to a musical backdrop of Mickey Most and Mike Leander productions, Lee Perry and the Glitter Band. Back In Denim was recorded and mixed across a two year period on Lawrence’s return to London. It was finally completed in July 1992 and, for the first time in his career, Lawrence found himself signed to a major label via Boys Own, a dance label operating through London Records. The album was produced by John Leckie although completed by Lawrence with Brian O’Shaughnessy, Leckie having allegedly been driven to complete distraction by Lawrence who he described as madder and more impossible than anyone he’d worked with including Spector, Lennon and Syd Barrett. Back In Denim kick starts with the pounding Glitter beat of "Back In Denim". The Glitter Band’s drummer Pete Phipps is featured on the record. The album maintains a powerful mix of Glam and pop hooks and references throughout with one foot in the seventies past and the other very firmly in the technology of the nineties. As such, Back In Denim was an undoubted pre-cursor to Britpop, Blur and Pulp, in particular. As ever, throughout his career Lawrence was ahead but out of step with popular taste. Back In Denim was no mere exercise in nostalgia or Glam ‘n’ Glitter revival and, as Lawrence firmly attests today, it is a protest albumthough not without a real sense of biting humour coming through tracks like 'The Osmonds' and 'I’m Against The Eighties'. Thealbum’s only single, 'Middle Of The Road', was itself a reference to the 197O’s band of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" fame. It also featured Denim’s version of the theme from Robin’s Nest on the B-Side. Its lyrics, however, were truly cutting edge, a plea for theindividual’s right to choose rather than be force fed its heroes -'I hate The Stones and I hate blues/Eddie Cochran and Blue Suede Shoes/I hate the King, I hate Chuck Berry/I Hate hooker, I hateLeadbelly, alright!" Well, we understand the sentiment, but we actually quite like all of those people!! Still, each to their own. Back In Denim was unveiled to the music press before Christmas 1992 and received the most astonishing reviews at the time. In itswisdom, London Records were completely thrown by the ecstatic press reaction just as they hade been puzzled that it sounded nothing like Felt. They chose to delay the album and preface it with a single instead. All momentum was lost and the single, of course, flopped. Lawrence’s dream was once again shattered although right now, in 2006, the dream is alive once again. Back In Denim should now get its just desserts just as Lawrence, a true wild card, completes a brand new album from what was once a Denim side project, Go Kart Mozart. He’s back. Reissue of the month.

Momus & Anne Laplantine - Summerisle. CD. (Analog Baroque - ANALOG010CD)

'Summerisle' is a unique album by Momus and Anne Laplantine, two recording artists based in Berlin, Germany. Momus (aka Nick Currie), for those of you unfamiliar, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, globetrotter and 'human synthesizer' who, as well as releasing his own peppery albums on British indie labels from 4AD to Creation, helped Mastermind the 1990s Japanese pop boom known as Shibuya-kei, scoring several top ten hits. Since then he's lived in New York, Tokyo and Berlin and moved towards a sort of baroque electro-acoustic folk style, subsequently plundered by the likes of Four Tet and Matmos as 'folktronica'.'Summerisle' is a collection of computer folk songs featuring the voice of Momus accompanied on guitar and computer by Anne Laplantine (whose own albums appear on French, German and Austrian labels like Gooom, Tomlab, and Angelika Kohlerman). Reference points for Momus are the cult 1972 horror film 'The Wicker Man' (with its brilliant fake folk soundtrack by Paul Giovanni) as well as field recordings of old Japanese people and the ethnomusicology of Alan Lomax. References for Anne Laplantine are artists like Fennesz, Jim O'Rourke and Goodiepal. This is a beautiful and soothing record positioned in the blurred area where ironic computer folk morphs into the real thing. Anne and Momus have succeeded in giving their synthetic 'Summerisle' some of the magic of Prospero's island in Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest': It's the perfect soundtrack to the lazy, folky summer of 2004. Not that this writer can actually remember there being one, but then again he's not middle class.

Slaughter Joe - Ze Do Caixao (The Complete Creation And Kaleidoscope Session. CD. (Rev Ola - CRREV53)

Out of the mists comes yet another in our series of Creation Records superstars... the missing link between Biff Bang Pow, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine... Slaughter Joe (and his Modern Folk Quintet). A simple blocking move Masterminded by Creation founders Alan McGee and Joe Foster to corner the noisepop market in the wake of their production of The Jesus and Mary Chain took on a life of it's own, as their fictitious character, like Ziggy Stardust before him, tried for his own seat on the board. In the process, though, many wild sound experiments were made, many insane gigs were undertaken, all the way up until the same team pushed My Bloody Valentine onto their weird voyages. With a team including ex-TVP Dave Musker, Buzzcocks bassist/producer Tony Barber, June Brides Viola player Francis Sweeney and west coast garage supremo Alec Palao, a fairly coherent if eccentric body of work was produced, both for Creation and for it's Kaleidoscope Sounds offshoot Loved by many of today's top groups, a hero in Detroit and LA, the subject of a growing number of cover versions, our cartoon character sings for his supper once more! This is the first time a complete collection has been on CD.

Originally released in 1975 on the Vertigo label the Streetwalkers were the post-Family band formed by Family Masterminds Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney. Where their former band balanced art-rock and blues-rock, the Streetwalkers were a throwback, a blues-rock band that put Chapman's extraordinary voice front and center of the outfit and this album has an excellent 70's feel to it.
