Action - Brain. CD. Famous '60s UK Mod Band who after taking lots of acid became Mighty Baby. This album is the long lost psychedelic Action album from 1967/68 and is prime UK '60s Mod Psych with an "Ogdens Nut Gone" Small Faces, Blossom Toes feel. Choice quality stuff!

Action - Rolled Gold. CD. (Parasol - REACT01CD) Taken from the master tapes, here is the previously unreleased genuine psychedelic masterpiece by The Action (who later became Mighty Baby). Certainly in the top ten UK '60s psych albums - along with Pink Floyds debut, Family's first, and Tomorrow's album. Forget the previous Brain CD of a few years back. This is the genuine artifact with full sleeve notes and pics!!

(Demon Records - ED 101) Excellent vinyl compilation of all of the singles by this legendary UK Mod band who turned into Mighty Baby. 17 tracks all produced by George Martin and sleeve notes by Paul Weller. A great place to start with this fine and hugely influential mod band.

Action - Uptight And Outasight. Dble CD. Double CD collection from British mod group The Action (later to become Mighty Baby) which contains recordings from T.V./Radio/Live etc of Action single (+ one from "Rolled Gold" era) tracks. Another five are totally unreleased, and appear here for the first time ever on any record!. The second 'bonus' C.D. will have 16 live tracks from The Boston Arms/Dome, London - their second re-union gig in 1998. There are an additional two tracks compared to similar ones featured on the band's video tape of the occasion "In The Lap of the Mods". All copies are individually machine-numbered, and feature a 16-page colour (outer and centre spread) booklet.

Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers - Bongos Over Balham- Expanded Edition. CD. (Sanctuary/Castle - CMRCD1329) Finally available on CD after one hell of a long wait, the second album by these legendary jamming pub rockers, influenced equally by Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Alexis Korner and Jerry Garcia! Featuring among their lineup the legendary Phil 'Snakefinger' Lithman (later a collaborator with The Residents), rock journeyman Martin Stone (previously of the Action, Mighty Baby, Junior's Blues Band and, who believe it or not, has been a sometime Current 93/ Bevis Frond collaborator in the 90s) later Rumour bassist Paul Riley, and future Elvis Costello & The Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, Chilli Willi were one of the many bands who faltered at the time due to the predominance of progressive rock, something their three-chord style was at odds with even though they often played on bills with those acts-and though many wax lyrical these days about the pub rock era, it must be said that the Chilli boys would probably have loved to play stadiums and theatres!! Nevertheless, 'Bongos. . .' is an infectious feelgood fest that captures perfectly, along with Dr Feelgood's 'Stupidity' and the Tyla Gang's 'Yachtless' the cosy, boozy atmosphere of those classic years, and if one closes one's eyes and listens to 'Truck Driving Girl' or 'Desert Island Woman' they can almost forget that in the same year bands were releasing albums called 'Tales From Topographic Oceans'!! The superb original artwork (with its late 40s 'Pink Pearl Light' advert included) is reproduced here: the album is now expanded to a wapping (crap pun intended) 22 tracks, among them the B-side from their one single and ten demos and outtakes never before heard!! Liner notes are by David Wells and the whole shebang is full of photos and memorabilia. Mine's a pint of ordinary- but there's nothing ordinary about the music. Cracking!!

Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers - Kings Of The Robot Rhythm. CD. The Mighty Baby related band who were part of the great British pub rock scene of the early '70s,along with Ducks Deluxe, Kilburn & the Highroads, Dr Feelgood etc. Musically they were different to those bands playing a laid-back light hearted mixture of hippy country, and funky acoustic folk/blues. Formed by Junior's Blues Band members Martin Stone (vocals, guitar, mandolin) - also in Mighty Baby and Savoy Brown - and Phil "Snakefinger" Lithman (vocals, guitar, piano, lap steel, fiddle) the duo recorded this album (72) with vocalist Jo-Ann Kelly and various members of Brinsley Schwarz. Exact repro of the original sleeve with a fold out insert.

This West London enclave was the epicentre of all things cool and underground this was where the beautiful people hung out and grooved to their very own community rock bands like Hawkwind, the Pink Fairies, and Quintessence; where the people on the street rubbed shoulders with the musicians - writers like Michael Moorcock, artists like Barney Bubbles - and even had their own alternative newspaper Frendz. Gary Farr - Take Something With You. CD. (Small Town - CAMD5) Originally released on Marmalade Records (superb product of late 60s psychedelia, the swirling label etc) in 1969 the album features a beautiful mixture of acoustic ballads/gentle rock songs with echoes of Tim Hardin,John St Field, or Roy Harper .Worthy of note is the disturbed "Green" which has gentle flutes over gentle spat out lyrics, and the massive production of "Time Machine" which builds and builds with choirs,strings and echoed vocals. The supporting players include three members of Mighty Baby. Highly recommended by the F.E. staff.NOW DELETED THESE ARE THE LAST FEW COPIES

Glastonbury Fayre - Various. Dble CD + DVD. (Akarma - AK367TCD) Finally here's a CD edition of the original Glastonbury Fayre, a forerunner of the more commercial Festival we know today. The original event was a psychedelic freak-out celebration of the UK counterculture that took place in the depths of the Somerset countryside in 1972. Bands performing included the Pink Fairies, the Edgar Broughton Band, Mighty Baby, Gong, Brinsley Schwarz, and Skin Alley. The triple album that resulted included live and studio performances by bands that appeared on the bill as well as donated recordings by bands that were unable to appear (i.e. the Grateful Dead). Keith Christmas - Stimulus. CD. Originally released in 1969 this is a lost treasure on which Keith was backed by members of Mighty Baby who together created a late 60's "laid back Dylan,John St. Field/early John Martyn/Mick Softley/Roy Harper" styled album.The emphasis is on long tracks "Trial & Judgement" (9 minutes) & "I know You Can't Loose"(5 Mins) showing great songwriting and impressive overlapping guitar parts. Keith Christmas - Stories From The Human Zoo. CD. Reissue of second and final solo album by ex-Mighty Baby member originally released on Manticore Records in 1976. Engineered by Michael Boshears with arrangements by Cat Stevens and featuring an amazing array of American musicians like Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck'Dunn, Snuffy Walden and more. Remastered and for the first time on CD. Booklet contains lyrics and photographs.

Lee Michaels - Space & First Takes. CD. (One Way Records - OW 33645) Later funky album with long tracks (two at nearly 15 minutes each). Plenty of lengthy keyboard and guitar workouts underlaid with a groovy back beat. At times this album sounds like Mighty Baby! BARGAIN PRICE.

Originally released on the "United Artists" label in 1971 (although it's earlier recordings date from 1969), via production company "Sahara Records", the 'Reg King' album is a neglected 'lost classic'. Long sought-after by collectors, with original copies regularly achieving three-figure sums, this record features all original King/Dale material, with backing from the highly-respected musicians of "B.B. Blunder" (ex-Blossom Toes) and "Mighty Baby" (ex-The Action). Other 'stellar' names making their musical contributions to this album include Mick Taylor, Steve Winwood, Elton Dean and Brian Auger. In addition, a whole host of other musicians at the cutting edge of the British Jazz and Underground Rock scenes of the time assist in different places. Sandy Denny - North Star Grassman And The Ravens. CD. (Island - IMCD 313) The late Sandy Denny remains the pre-eminent British folk-singer.This remaster of the album from 1971 was her first solo album proper and like all her subsequent efforts featured Richard Thompson on guitar who is joined here with members of Mighty Baby and of course the ubiquitous Barry and Robin Dransfield. Highlights on this album include 'Late November' & the lengthy 'John The Gun' alongside the heartbreaking 'Next Time Around' and the wintery 'Wretched Wilbur'- the latter of which feature the chilling strings of Harry Robinson to great effect. A legendary folk singer with a beautiful voice and an album that should be in everyone's collection. Slipcased and includes expanded booklet and 4 bonus tracks, two of which have never been before released.

Shelagh McDonald - Let No Man Steal Your Thyme:The Collection. Dble CD. (Castle - CMDDD1065) This two CD set is a fantastic collection from a wonderful and little known English folk singer, lyricist and guitarist. Such was her talent that this set collects together both of her B&C LP's (from 1970 & 71) and various outtakes from the same sessions. Very much in the classic UK '70's folk rock mould the albums are filled with eclectic and acoustic music resplendent with laid back jamming melodic West Coast elements and an atmospheric production that ties together the overall rustic English Folk sensibilities. The second album includes some breathtaking orchestral/choir arrangements and overall the effect is somewhere between Sandy Denny and Judy Collins. These recordings are highly recommended to anyone into the folk rock genre (Jade, Fairport, Trees, Sandy Denny etc) By disappearing in early 1972 - shortly after the release of the S/T second album - Shelagh guaranteed herself serious cult status and with string arrangements by Robert Kirby, the involvement of a few Fairports, some Mighty Baby members and bass playing by Danny Thompson you know you are onto a winner!

Freaky acid prog vibes combine with a laid back west coast feel. Great musicianship highlighted by really long jamming tracks, assorted instrumentation and good songs that will appeal to fans of Mighty Baby, Man etc. Thick card sleeve.

Skin Alley - To Pagham And Beyond. CD. (Eclectic - ECLCD 1042) Digitally remastered version of the Dec 1970 release from this great UK progressive outfit.Quite possibly the best album by this UK freak / psych / prog band. A West Coast vibe flows through this album and gives it a rural spacey hippy feel with long jamming tracks, (check out "Walking In The Park" and "Take Me To Your Leaders Daughter") assorted instrumentation and good songs.For fans of Man , Mighty Baby etc.Fully detailed booklet rounds off this great re-issue.

Southern Comfort Featuring Shakey Horton And Martin Stone - Southern Comfort Featuring Shakey Horton And Martin Stone. CD. (Sun Beam - SBRCD5014) Whilst still with Mighty Baby, Martin Stone recorded a rare album called Southern Comfort with American blues harmonica player Walter ‘Shakey’ Horton when the legendary Chicago blues harpist visited the UK in 1968. Southern Comfort is a superb showcase for his talents,as well as those of bassist Jerome Arnold (the Butterfield Blues Band), drummer JessieC. Lewis (Otis Rush) and trailblazing guitarist Martin Stone (Savoy Brown and Mighty Baby). Though mostly a superb blues set, however, it’s best-known today for the epic closing track - "Netti-Netti" one of the most mind-blowing psychedelic workouts ever recorded. First time on CD, complete with rare photos & comprehensive sleevenotes

Spiritland - The Funk And Soul Of Blue Eyed Rock - Various. Dble CD. (Harmless - HURTCD 064) Spiritland is a document of an era when rock musicians looked to black America for inspiration and future directions, from the gritty urban scowl of blues, the penthouse soul of upwardly mobile Detroit to the sanctified yelp of Otis Redding. There are many much more well-known artists that we all know and love, but this dig's a little deeper and present songs you may not already know, some by groups with whom you may not be familiar, either. There's the raucous funky blues of Nick Gravenites' "Killing My Love" and Ten Wheel Drive’s Janis Joplin-flavoured "Tightrope", the Motown polish of Odyssey’s "Battened Ships", Mighty Baby’s psych-soul of "Egyptian Tomb" and Savoy Brown's "That Same Feeling"- and they're just for starters!!
