Beauty Shop - Yard Sale. CD. (Believe Music/Snapper - SMACD921) From the wilds (and we do mean wilds!) of Illinois, this 3 piece have been compared in the past to Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, the Violent Femmes, Iron And Wine and the Handsome Family- ie every dark, dysfunctional smalltown blues and country based rock act of the last twenty years!! Their edgy lo-fi country Noir sound, however, stems as much from the alt-rock guitar snarlings of J Mascis/Dinosaur Jr as it does to Johnny Cash, and lead singer John Hoffleur's downbeat sense of humour is eveident throughtout. This CD is a selection of the best tracks, compiled by the band themselves, from their first two albums 'Yr Money Or Yr Life' and 'Crisis Helpline'. Fascinating.

Black Cat Bones - Barbed Wire Sandwich. LP. (Tapestry Records - T221) 180 gram thick card sleeve version of this British blues rock band's sole album from1969.The band played late 60's raw progressive blues in the same vein as Chicken Shack and Ten Years After. The album features Rod Price on lead guitar and vocals (Foghat's future vocalist), Phil LeNoir on drums, Stu Brooks on bass guitar, Brian Short on additional vocals and Derek Brooks on rhythm guitar.LAST COPY OF THIS NOW DELETED TAPESTRY LP

Crime Scene USA - Classic Film Noir Themes & Jazz Tracks. CD. (Giant Step Records - GSCR 019) Absolutely essential to a good Noir was a cracking theme and atmospheric themes played throughout the film. Certainly not known for it's subtlety, many of the tracks were recorded so loud that they are nearly distorted, the needle permanately in the red. Included on this thirty three track compilation (taking the best cuts from noir films made between '40 and '57) are the themes to Sunset Boulevard, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, The Man With The Golden Arm, Key Largo, Kansas City Confidential, The Asphalt Jungle and many more.

Eduardo Mateo - Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame Plus Bonus Tracks. CD. (Acme - LION 613) This first volume of Mateos solo recordings includes the entire "Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame" album, plus a variety of tracks from Mateos early solo years. The eight bonus tracks include songs originally issued in Uruguay on the legendary "Musicasin 4 1/2" LP, two tracks live from a bowling alley (!), as well as four very special early recordings backing female singers: two sung by the lovely Diane DeNoir, and two by the mysterious Vernica Indart. Special slip-case edition comes with an oversize 48-page full-blown booklet packed with photos, text, and lyrics, which tries to unravel some of the myth surrounding this great surrealist poet and drug casualty, whose decline and ultimate madness and early death have done nothing to diminish his stature as one of the greatest artists in South American music. The music is lilting, poetic, intimate, in turns life-affirming and melancholic, with pulsating percussion backed by unheard-of guitar chords and tunings (perhaps the reason for the frequent Caetano Veloso and Nick Drake comparisons);

The movie (known in the US as Night Flight From Moscow and starring Yul Brynner, Henry Fonda, Dirk Bogarde and Philippe Noiret) has one of Morricone's best scores. Similar to his "Una Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna" soundtrack with pop instrumentals, weird scary sounds, romantic themes and 16 previously unreleased tracks. New artwork, gatefold sleeve and 180 gram vinyl!

Eyeless In Gaza - I Saw You In Reminding Pictures. DVD. (Cherry Red DVDs - CRDVD89) First ever DVD release from UK art-pop-noise-indie duo, one of those many fascinating bands from the early 80s with a fetish for military clothing, European literature and art cinema (cf B-Movie, Death In June, Monochrome Set) Their styles ranged from funk-punk to ambient Noir and gothic folk- this PAL disc represents them in concert at Le Havre in 1982 covering all of those bases with equal aplomb, at the time of the release of their acclaimed 'Drumming The Beating Heart' album. Also contains footage of the reformed band playing the Isle Of Wight Festival in 2004, plus two original promo vids for their singles 'Veil Like Calm' and 'New Risen'

Lalo Schifrin - Les Felins. CD. (Aleph - ALEP031) The full soundtrack to Rene Clement's highly respected cult film, written and arranged by the great Lalo Schifrin- known largely to outsiders for his arrangement of John Williams' score to Spielberg's "Jaws" but also an influential jazz pianist in his own right. The music definitely betrays the Argentinian's jazz roots, and features half of the best known French beboppers of the time (not to mention a track later covered by the great Jimmy Smith) but in truth is one of the starting points of what we now know as "lounge", and also a seminal work in the soundtracks field, laying the foundations for Bullitt, Dirty Harry and several others. All the music from the film is here on CD for the first time, so one can imagine the film in its Noir glory, or maybe just Jane Fonda in that basque. Up to you...

Let's Dig 'em Up - Vol 2 The Count Game - 60's Punk Contest. LP. (Notyme Records - NTL 003) Sixties garage punk gems from a variety of countries including Holland, France, Belgium and South Africa. Bands featured include Gants, Thee Impalas, Rocking Ghosts, Charms, Les Serpents Noir and a whole bunch more attitude ridden combos.

Louis Philippe - Rainfall / Jean Renoir. Dble CD. (Cherry Red - CDMRED162) A double album CD featuring two of Louis Philippe's most critically acclaimed records. This album is a colletors dream as both records sold out their limited edition pressing of 5,000 units. Never before have these titles been released outside of Japan. Both Rainfall and Jean ReNoir include bonus tracks not featured on their original pressings.

Pat Benatar - Tropico/Seven The Hard Way. CD. (B.G.O. Records - CD 433) 1984/5 albums. Pat was still very much a rock artist at this point but the songs were now beginning to sound weighted down in their heavily synthesised production, and were leaning heavily toward pop in their presentation- furthermore, the industry's packaging of Pat as some kind of raunchy teenage sex symbol in ripped tights, rar-ra skirt and anklewarmers was seriously beginning to rankle with her, especially as by this point she was a 30-year old mother of two. You can almost feel the anger beneath the veneer. . . Tracks: Diamond Field, We Belong (the massive hit), Painted Desert (the one with the really WEIRD video), Temporary Heroes, Love In The Ice Age, Ooh Ooh Song, The Outlaw Blues, Suburban King, A Crazy World Like This, Takin' It Back, Sex As A Weapon (another rant against the male dominated music industry), Le Bel Age (Pat goes film Noir), Walking In The Underground, Big Life, Red Vision, 7 Rooms Of Gloom (Four Tops cover), Run Between The Raindrops, Invincible (theme from the movie 'The Legend Of Billie Jean'), The Art Of Letting Go, Love Is A Battlefield (probabaly Pat's best known song, which is unfortunate as it only hints as to what her music actually sounds like).
