Cool Mikado (Various) - Original Soundtrack. CD. (El/Richmond - ACME34CD)

To celebrate the reactivation of el Records, the label is pleased to be instigating a programme to re-release authentic, stylish, highly regarded and long deleted original film soundtracks from the sixties beginning with Michael Winner's 1962 Gilbert & Sullivan film parody 'The Cool Mikado'. 'The Cool Mikado' features original music by the John Barry Seven, songs performed in characteristic style by Frankie Howerd, dance routines by Lionel Blair and comic sketches involving Tommy Cooper, Mike & Bernie Winters, Pete Murray and Stubby Kaye. While the film is no cinematic masterpiece, it is an authentic Eastmancolor period piece full of historical interest. Frankie Howerd of course was hardly less than a comic institution in Britain through the sixties and seventies-his career peaking with the bawdy ancient Greek television romp 'Up Pompeii'. John Barry would go on to become Britain's foremost composer on the international film music scene with credits including the James Bond films, 'The Ipcress File' with Michael Caine and the highly popular 'Persuaders Theme' for the television programme which featured Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. 'The Cool Mikado' was also one of the first feature films of Michael Winner who later in the sixties would direct Oliver Reed and Michael Crawford in 'The Jokers' and Orson Welles with Reed again in 'I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name'. The soundtrack, initially released on Parlophone, has been deleted almost four decades and is a highly prized collectors item with original copies (if they can be found at all) fetching in excess of £100. Therefore, this stylish re-issue of 'The Cool Mikado' is sure to be welcomed by film buffs el aficionados and (indeed) the record-buying public alike.

Die Zorros - History Of Rock Vol.7. CD. (Voodoo Rhythm - VRCD15)

More exotica/strange/thrash fun from Switzerland, with this party-down trio of incompetents (Beat-Man on drums, Oliver Guz on Farfisa, Patrik Abt on guitar & bass) destroying cheesy hits of the 60's and 70's by Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Los Bravos and others. All recorded between 1968-79 this is the ultimate bizarre exotica garage album reminiscent of The Shaggs and King Uszniewicz and the Usniewicztones! Ludicrous, awful and brilliant. Doc Holliday - Rides Again. CD. (Rock Candy - CANDY004)

First time ever on CD in the UK for this fine album from an underrated Southern Rock act, featuring two of their best toons 'Southern Man' (no, not the Neil Young song- well, think about it, that wouldn't make sense now, would it?) and 'Lonesome Guitar'. An album's worth of 100 percent sour mash sippin', Confederate flag flyin', stetson wearin' rock'n' roll, here released as a special collector's edition with 2 unreleased bonus tracks from the original sessions added. Remastered with a full 16 page booklet, and a 4,000 word blurb from Derek Oliver and XAVIER RUSSELL, who wrote things in CAPITAL LETTERS!! They don't make journos like that anymore. Dwarves - Dwarves Must Die. CD.

The Dwarves are so lost in legend, it's impossible to discern rumor from truth. The most vile drug abusers this side of G.G. Allin bathe in Rock'n'Roll excess like an Evil Knievel on Angel Dust. Garage, Hardcore/ Punk, Art-Rock, Pop, even Hip Hop are swallowed like a pile of bad pills. Nick Oliveri (ex-QOTSA) and Dexter Holland (the Offspring) trip along to a place where even Parental Advisory stickers don't dare to stick on this 2004 release.

King Harvest - Dancing In The Moonlight. CD. (Collectables - COL25282)

A reissue of the debut album from this 70s US band who graced the charts with their one and only hit single 'Dancing In The Moonlight' (later covered, of course, in the 00s by the noxious and loathsome Toploader and used on that bloody advert with Jamie 'Punch Me In The Face' Oliver, but it wasn't their fault, was it?) Unique for their lineup that featured three keyboardists, guitar, bass, drums and saxophone, but sadly unable to capitalise on their one US Top 20 hit despite the support of the Beach Boys ( who loved them) they split after a second album in 1977. This is, however, quality East Coast soul-rock not a million miles away from the Asbury Jukes or Sons Of Champlin, and should be checked out.

Lord Buckley - The Royal Court Of Lord Buckley. CD. (El - ACMEM74CD)

Described as "the fuel to my success" by Bob Dylan and "the most sensational comic of our time" by none less than Frank Sinatra, Lord Buckley was one of the bravest, best loved artists America has ever produced. A profoundly original fifties / sixties beat poet / comedian who dressed as an English aristocrat but spoke in the argot of black America, Buckley was literally the original rapper. His subjects include Christ ('the Nazz'), Gandhi, Nero and Julius Caesar. Unlike many beat poets whose work tends to be serious, Buckley is humorous and extremely entertaining. Fans of Lord Buckley include Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Lenny Bruce, Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Dizzy Gillespie, Ornette Coleman, Dylan, Sinatra and many others. The late great artist has a legion of followers in Britain and America especially where his life has been as seriously documented as any classical artist. And 2006 celebrates a centenary, as he was born on April 6th 1906. 'The Royal Court of Lord Buckley' restores in their entirety the first Lord Buckley albums "Euphoria Volumes 1and 2" that were originally issued by the Vaya label in America 1951; the definitive performance of Buckley's signature piece 'The Nazz'(Jesus of Nazareth) along with other startling Buckley monologues including "The Hip Gahn" (Mahatma Gandhi), "The Gasser" (Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca), "Jonah & the Whale" (The Old Testament) "Nero" (ancient Rome) and very rare historical recordings of 'Murder','The Dog and the Wolf', 'The Grasshopper and the Ant', 'The Mouse & the Lion' and 'The Lion's Breath' A biography of Buckley has just been published called "Dig Infinity!" written by Oliver Trager, It's only a matter of time before Hollywood - or somebody- makes a film. The original Buckley, and the best.

Pauline Oliveros - Electronic Works 1965-66. CD. (Paradigm - PD04)

Great CD from Paradigm Records (Brast Burn,Karuna Khyal) that contains 3 lengthy compositions from pioneering American electronic composer Oliveros which date from 1965 to '66 and display her early explorations into tape music. On these tracks you will hear huge sonic swirls, tape delay systems, shrill electronic pulsations and cascades of sound. It's original to this day, although you can hear its influence in many other works by synthesizer avant-gardists in later years. Electronics from the 60s that works as ambient isolationism from the 90s.Amazing stuff from an intriguing label

Rock 'n' Roll Bell Ringers - Various. CD. (Ace Records - CDCHD 1042)

Debut reissue of 1950s rock and roll cover versions originally released on Bell Records (not to be confused with 70s UK glitter-rock label). Starting as a purveyor of budget hit-making artistes in the early-mid 50s, the roster soon included some damn impressive artistes- Edna McGriff (yes, sister of Jimmy) Barry Frank, Buddy Lucas, Bob Miller and Tony Wilson (no, not THAT Tony Wilson). Backed by some of NYC's finest sessioneers, including the Sy Oliver Orchestra, all the 7 inches came in attractive sleeves which are all reproduced on the front cover and the rest of the booklet. Most interestingly of all, it features the track 'Baby Talk' by Tom and Jerry- not the cartoon menaces, but two Jewish Noo Yawk schoolboys later better known as. . . Simon And Garfunkel!! Notes by expert Mike Atherton (no, not the cricketer!) A vital slice of unsung rock and roll history.

Sammy Davis Jr - Where Is Love?. Dble CD. (Snapper / Charly - SNAD545CD)

A double CD of tracks showcasing this most versatile of popular singers from the 'crooning' era, a man who alongside Sinatra, Crosby, Martin and Bennett defined the boundaries of popular song. All recorded for the Governor's Reprise lable in the 60s, the tracks range from big band swing standards such as 'The Lady Is A Tramp' and 'I've Got You Under My Skin' (backed by the inimitable Buddy Rich) to duets with Latin guitar virtuoso Laurindo Almeida and interpretations of popular 60s rock hits ('Macarthur Park' 'Wichita Lineman' ). The title track originates from the musical Oliver! By Lionel Bart, just one example of Sammy's shrewd choice of songwriters, arrangers, accompanists and producers. Incredible stuff.
