Allan Clarke - Heroes And Survivors. Dble CD. (Castle - CMDDD964) As leader of the Hollies, Allan Clarke sang on more hits than anyone in the 60s and early 70s. But at various stages of his career, he stepped away from the band to concentrate on his solo career, producing quality work that sounded quite different from the Hollies’ bubbly pop. He was an early champion of Bruce Springsteen’s work, and a fine songwriter in his own right, as this collection proves.

Allen Ginsberg - First Blues. Dble CD. (Water Music - WATER166) Beat generation poet Allen Ginsberg was also a singer/songwiter who was encouraged to write and record by none other than Bob Dylan, who took Allen into the studio his first ever "music" recordings. Those 1971 recordings with Dylan, as well as sessions from 1976 with members of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review band produced by maverick John Hammond (Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Bruce Springsteen), and additional recordings from 1981 were gathered together and released as the double LP First Blues in 1983. Many of the recordings feature cello player Arthur Russell (known for his 1970's Flying Hearts band and his ground-breaking 1980's solo recordings). First time on CD: 24 songs on 2 CDs. Allman Brothers Band - American University 12/13/70. CD. (Sanctuary Records - CMQCD1186) The title pretty much sums it up really: a lengthy live jamming album recorded as part of the American University series in 1970 (kind of like the US equivalent to Rock Goes To College) from this revered and somewhat ad hoc Southern Rock ensemble. Beards, stetsans and huge Winnebagos Spring to mind at the sound of each chord. The interplay between keyboardist Gregg Allman and guitarists Duane Allman (who departed this world shortly after) and Berry Oakley is phenomenal, particularly on the classically-influenced sections they were so fond of slipping in at the time.

America - Live In Central Park. DVD. (EMI - 544 6429) At the end of the summer of 1979 renowned film maker Peter Clifton travelled to NY to film the climatic concert of America's world tour. In front of a packed out open air amphitheatre the band's founders Dewey Bunnell & Gerry Beckley, with an all star line up of musicians, performed their hits in an electrifying concert.Peter returned with the band to Hollywood where he kept shooting Gerry & Dewey as they overdubbed the concert recordings at Capitol recording studios. To complete the 1 hour film Peter took the band to the Palm Springs desert to recreate the original inspiration behind 'Horse With No Name'. The live concert special is the only time America have been shot on film & remains a testament to one of the great folk rock bands of the '70s. As an extra this DVD includes director's commentary.Region 0 PAL disc.

Bob Neuwirth - Bob Neuwirth. CD. (Water Music - 109) Until this 1974 album on Asylum, Bob Neuwirth was best known for his work with Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin (co-writing "Mercedes Benz" - included here with altered lyrics). This debut features guest appearances from Rita Coolidge, Mama Cass, Don Everly, Richie Furay, Chris Hillman, Booker T, Kris Kristofferson, Ian Matthews and Dusty Springfield. Similar in style to some of Dylan's more country-oriented albums and remastered from the original tapes this is on CD for the first time.

A major league late '60s US psychedelic album that until recently was completely unknown. The Brain Police were completely forgotten until recently despite the fact they gigged with the Doors, Buffalo Springfield and other major West Coast bands. Bread - Bread. CD. (Wounded Bird Records - WOU 7404) 1969 debut album by the Californian soft rockers. Blending the folk roots of the Byrds and Springfield with classic British melodicism was their forte and they quickly became the benchmark for the soft rock scene. Capable of writing simple melodies that would stick in your head, David Gates was the one who wrote the hits while James Griffin and Robb Royer wrote the rockier stuff (that didn't do as well but were equally as well crafted). Includes: "It Don't Matter to Me", "Truckin" and "Make It With You."

Brian Davison - Every Which Way. CD. (Long Hair Music - LH51) After The Nice had split at the end of 1969, drummer Brian Davison founded his own band Every Which Way in Spring 1970. Beside Brian Davison, singer Graham Bell (Skip Bifferty, Bell & Arc) mainly characterized the band’s music. They played a rather meditative and hypnotized sound with strong vocals and fine guitar and sax playing. The one and only album of the band, original released in Autumn 1970, is a very fascinating affair to relax by as well as to feel thrilled. Comes with comprehensive booklet including liner notes by Brian Davison. Highly recommended.

(Ace Records - CDCHD 851) For the first time on CD a collection Brian's production work from the mid-1960's of which many were written and performed on by Brian. Includes Gary Usher, American Spring, Glen Campbell, The Honey's, Sharon Marie, Survivors, Laughing Gravy & Rachel & The Revolvers. The crystal clear Wilson multi-layered sound is as amazing as ever as these tracks have been lifted from the original masters. The CD includes a lavish 20 page booklet.

Bruce Palmer - Cycle Is Complete. LP. (Abraxas - AK 269) Bruce Palmer is perhaps better known as the bassist for Buffalo Springfield, one of the greatest rock groups of the ‘60s. Palmer as reserved as he was genius released this solo album in 1970 which remains one of the strangest rock albums ever created. An eclectic masterpiece that magnificently fuses the most disparate genres- folk, jazz, rock psych, trance to create a fascinating sound that was at least three decades ahead of its time. Every track is its own chapter, "Alpha-Omega-Apocalypse" frenetically explores jazz territories and is enhanced by the blues vocals of Rick Matthews (AKA Rick James, future psychedelic soul star). In "Oxo" eastern influences predominate, while "Calm Before The Storm" is a languid and intriguing journey characterized once again by interesting ideas and an impeccable performance. Nevertheless this remains one of THE key albums of the acid-folk boom, much loved by everyone from Stephen Malkmus of Pavement to David Tibet of Current 93, who covered 'The Song Of Solomon' on their 'Seven Seals' EP. Dan The Banjo Man - Dan The Banjo Man. CD. (Angel Air - SJPCD191) Not by a man called Dan, and not featuring any banjos!! Instead this was Springwater (remember 'I Will Return'?) mainman Phil Cordell emerging under yet another pseudonym (like Tony Burrows or Jonathan King but with talent) The single from the album , also entitled 'Dan The Banjo Man' went to No 1 in Germany TWICE, largely due to its usage as a commercial for orange juice. To those of us who grew up in Blighty this will remain an entertaining curio like Stavely Makepeace or Flintlock, but that should encourage rather than deter prospective buyers. First ever CD issue, with informative sleevenotes by Rich Wilson, and eight bonus tracks from the sessions.

Dando Shaft - Dando Shaft. LP. (Akarma - AK 255) Vinyl (180 gram) reissue of classic 1971 UK folk rock album with psychedelic overtones. This was Dando Shaft's second album and continued in the acoustic vein of the first. With a jazzy feel to their brand of folk, comparisons to Pentangle are inevitable but there is a trippy twist with songs such as "Waves Upon The Ether" and the hilarious dope tale "Whispering Ned". Dave Edmunds - D.E.7th/Information. CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD545) 1982 and 1983 albums, originally available on the Arista record label. ‘D.E.7th’, which was Dave’s seventh solo album, was released in the Spring of 1982, and ‘Information’ was released almost exactly a year later. ‘D.E.7th’ was produced by Edmunds using a basic backing band of John David (bass), Dave Charles (ex-Help Yourself, drums) and Geraint Watkins (keyboards), plus Albert Lee guesting on guitar on a couple of tracks. Probably the most significant song on the album is the opener, ‘From Small Things Big Things Come’, which was written by Bruce Springsteen (supposedly especially for Edmunds, yet another in a line of artists Broooce has done this for), but there's also a cover of Doug Kershaw's "Louisiana Blues", and indeed the album does lean very much toward cajun and zydeco influences." Information", quite a different beats altogether, features Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) producing two tracks on the album, and playing on the title track. Another of ELO’s alumni, Richard Tardy, is credited with playing synth, and the celebrated Paul Jones (of Blues Band fame) adds a bit of harmonica. ‘Slipping Away’ was released as a single and reached the UK Top 75 and the US Top 40, while the album just made the UK Top 100 and peaked just outside the US Top 50, which wasn’t a bad result at all really. Decameron - Mammoth Special Plus. CD. (Edsel - EDCD686) This excellent band recorded an album for Vertigo,Transatlantic and this, their first for Mooncrest. A lost UK folk rock gem,originally released in 1974 and stylistically varied with lush and huge string arrangement's by Robert Kirby (Nick Drake). This album could really be described as "Prog Folk" as the guitars get quite beefy at times while on the other hand the band's cover Buffalo Springfield's "Rock & Roll Woman" has a real West Coast Flavour. Fab. Includes detailed booklet.

Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - The Days Of Mars. CD. (DFA - DFAEMI 2144CD) 2005 debut album by Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom. The world glimpsed on "The Days of Mars" is an incredibly vivid one. Touching upon their love of everything from Alice Coltrane to acid-house, Santeria ritual music to the kosmiche side of krautrock, opener 'Rise' draws on these touchstones while remaining true to Delia and Gavin's mesmerizing sound; repetitious sinewaves ripple and undulate to achieve a heightened state of awareness. 'Black Spring' pulses and builds like a climax to a long-lost horror flick (think zombies or a post-apocalyptic world) and the two are at work on a short film for the epic, expansive third track, 'Relevee', though it's easy to imagine your own movie when listening to its swirls and arpeggiations.

DOA - Positively DOA- DOA Live. DVD. (Cherry Red DVDs - CRDVD125) The first ever DVD to feature one of the great Punk bands of all time - D.O.A. It wasn't long before punk rock expanded beyond just New York City, London, and Los Angeles during the mid-late '70s, as evidenced by the emergence of the long-running Vancouver, Canada based outfit, D.O.A. Originally formed in 1978, D.O.A. has been led from the beginning by singer/guitarist Joe Keithley, aka 'Joey Shithead,' who has been joined by a wide variety of other bandmates through the years. The same year as their formation, D.O.A. issued a debut EP, Disco Sucks, before following it up with a pair of full lengths that many longtime fans consider D.O.A.'s classic recordings, 1980's Something Better Change and 1981's Hardcore '81. Since the beginning Keithley has been unafraid to voice his political opinions (a renown D.O.A. slogan among their faithful is 'TALK-ACTION 0') which, at one point, landed him in jail. D.O.A. would go on to issue albums throughout the '80s and '90s (including such highlights as 1982's War on 45, 1985's The Dawning of a New Error, 1993's Loggerheads, etc.). Keithley also runs his own indie record company, Sudden Death Records, and issued an autobiography in late 2003, titled 'I, Shithead: A Life in Punk.' D.O.A. continues strong to this day, as evidenced by such releases as 2002's Win the Battles. As a result of Keithley's hard work, D.O.A. is often name checked as an important influence by otherhardcore/punk bands, including such notables as Green Day, the OffSpring, Rancid, and Propagandhi, among others. "Positively D.O.A" features a full show from the band during their 1984 tour of the UK.

Ghost - Overture. CD + DVD. (Drag City - DC330CD) At sunset on the night of October 9th, 2006, a crowd gathered at Nippon Yusen Soko, a converted warehouse space located on Yokahama Bay. Their purpose: to see and hear new music played by Ghost. Once they had completely arrived, the doors were shut and locked and the announcement made: no one would enter or exit the space until the performance was complete. Starting in complete darkness, the performance was spun, like yarn from a cocoon.The set for this evening was not just new to the audience. For this event, Ghost played entirely improvised material. Improvisation is the wellSpring of creation for Ghost, both live and in the studio, though they’ve never made an entire album of improvisations until now. In order to not miss a single inspiration, Ghost brought their orchestra’s-worth of instrumentation, playing bass, drums,piano, electric and acoustic guitars, saxophones, flute, tin-whistle, bells, frame drums, lute, tabla-baya, waterphone and even tapes!The CD performance is an edited version of the evening’s events, but the DVD is a completely live, four-camera view into the collective journey of Ghost and their audience. Gong - Live 2 Infinitea. CD. (Snapper - SMA CD 834) Recorded on the 2000 Spring tour, this is the current incarnation playing largely tracks from their latest studio album, together with a smattering of oldies. Plenty of saxophone work from Didier Malherbe and Theo Travis and of course Daevid Allen's glissando guitar.This CD presents a band still very active, engaging, and relevant and the sound quality is excellent as well. Steve Wilson of P.Tree gets a mention in the sleeve notes too !

Gorillaz Vs Space Monkeyz - Laika Come Home. CD. (EMI - 07243 53998226) Space Monkeyz take on dubbing up the Gorillaz' (Blur's Damon Albarn's virtual hip-hop group) self titled debut 2001 album and renaming it 'Laika Come Home'. Remixing all the tracks in an authentic sounding '70s dub style, in fact not much is recoginisable from the original tracks. Who are the Space Monkeyz? Gorillaz.com quotes they are "Mutant offSpring of the monkey cosmonauts sent into space during the Cold War". Well they sent us into orbit!

Produced by Jimmy Iovine [Bruce Springsteen,Tom Petty,Patti Smith] this album has not been available for quite some time, top notch songwriting from GP on this album and also the last album to feature Brinsley Schwarz and the Rumour complete. Featuring Bruce Springsteen (who Parker has often been cited as a UK equivalent to) and 2 bonus tracks including an unreleased live version of "Hey Lord Don’t Ask Me Questions" recorded in 1981. This is a very collectable album!

Green - Green. CD. (Fallout - FOCD2037) One of the most unjustly neglected albums of its time,this superb collection of snappy psychedelic rock first appeared in1969 and makes its long-overdue CD debut here, complete with four previously-unheard pre-album demos.A brilliant mixture of raw guitar,subtle horns and catchy songwriting, the album comes across as a delightful amalgam of the Beatles, the Zombies and Buffalo Springfield, making it a must-have for fans of classic 60s psychedelia.

Gypsy (UK) - Romany Collection. CD. (Hux Records - HUXO56) Gypsy were one of the great attractions at the Isle Of Wight 1969 Festival. A couple of years later, they released their debut eponymous album which drew favourable comparisons with Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape. The Romany Collection brings together the long awaited reissue of Gypsy’s first album, plus both sides of their debut single and six previously unreleased studio tracks.This album was compiled with the full co-operation of the band, who provided photographs for the 8 page booklet and assisted with the extensive liner notes

Hamana - Hamana. LP. (World In Sound Records - RFR-027) Hamana´s debut album, recorded in 1974, was issued on the local Phoenix label, Canyon Records. To most of the 60´s psychedelic rock/folk fans this is almost an unknown album, original pressings seem to be disappeared, only a few copies are known in collectors hands. Bruce Hamana, a native American, is member of the Indian Hopi Tribe and went in 1969 to college near San Francisco to live -in the white man's world. Instead of traditional native American themes he felt like writing modern, revolutionary, contemporary music. The result you hear on this album is powerful and melodic, and expresses perfectly the sunny California peace, love & freedom feeling, but also contains a social-critical message: 'One of these days everything is gonna change, things you take for granted will be taken away from you' - The music itself is emotive with strong vocals, lots of West Coast psychedelic guitar flashes, with a touch of garage flair and a smidgin of loner folk style. This album should appeal to fans of Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, X.I.T, Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, Garrett Lund : almost unbelievably, on these recordings all instruments, bass, guitars, vocals and drums have been played by Hamana himself, to get overdubbed and to become finally a tasty and atmospheric stereo acoustic/electric mix. CD. 2nd outing(first full length) from this UK rock band who have filled the album with killer riffs, and earned it's title by taking 10 days to record, with the last day falling on the last day of Spring! Tracks like "Overhang", "Visit My World" and "Summer Rain" are outstanding tracks on this excellent album. The band have toured with Unida, Spirit Caravan, Orange Goblin And Anathema.

Help Yourself - 5. CD. Formed in London in 1969, Help Yourself released four very fine albums which drew heavily on the sound of West Coast outfits like Buffalo Springfield and Quicksilver Messenger Service. In 1973 they began recording their fifth album-however, these sessions were never completed, the album was never released, and the band split. Eventually, in the winter of 2002, the original Help Yourself band members, augmented by drummer Kevin Spacey, gathered once more to finally complete their fifth album. Appropriately titled ‘5’, it is now released here for the first time and it's brilliant, sounding like it was released in 1973. The cover features an original illustration by the legendary Rick Griffin and the booklet includes a liner note from Malcolm Morley and Phil McMullen of Ptolemaic Terrascope. .

Ah, the Seventies and Eighties (Sixties in the case of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You"). When birds were birds and ladies were, you know, LAYDEEEES, before Chavettes even existed!! Hot Gossip haircuts, spandex and shoulderpads, them were the days!! On this disc McFadden And Whitehead, The Whispers, The Pointer Sisters, Shalamar, Barry Blue and Leo Sayer rub shoulders with the slightly tackier Kelly Marie, Yazz and Sinitta- believe me, after several Babychams it'll all sound like 'Forever Changes'. Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America. LP. (No Idea Records - ACT019) Blue collar tales of youth and excess by Brooklyn Rockers that is indebted to '70's Springsteen and Thin Lizzy but in a god way. These songs have been written by someone who knows the bottom of a whiskey glass and has clearly experienced a good night out or two and a broken heart as well. Power chords and susprisingly touching anthems aplenty, this is high quality modern US rock music.

Holy Mackerel - Holy Mackerel. CD. (Collectors Choice - CCM5432) That is quite likely to be your exclamation when you hear how good this record is! The Holy Mackerel was a loosely shifting organization (early Jefferson Airplane bassist Bob Harvey and Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin were among its members) but at it's heart was Paul Williams song writing - which travelled in pop, country and psychedelic directions with the help of future platinum producer Richard Perry. John Cage - 'Four Walls: Richard Bunger-piano, Jay Clayton-voice. CD. (Tomato - TOM2019) This beautiful piece for piano solo (Richard Bunger), with a scene for the unaccompanied solo voice of Jay Clayton in the middle, is of approximately one hour's duration. It was written originally as music for a theater piece, a "dance play" psychodrama about a family conceived by the dancer Merce Cunningham, which had only one performance in Steamboat Springs, CO on August 22, 1944. The music is played entirely on the white keys of the piano, which gives the work natural modal qualities, and the music is not complex, as it was designed to be easily played by a pianist unknown to either Cage or Cunningham, and there was no travel money for Cage to attend the rehearsals with the pianist. All of these circumstances resulted in a work of direct, evocative, mesmerizing musical gestures, some set off by silences of varying length, some of insistent rhythm with simple variation.

The scene was the Cellar, a downstairs nightclub that used to be a Chinese restaurant. The experiment was an attempt to meld the twin forms of modern expression-jazz and poetry. The participants were two San Francisco poets - Kenneth Rexroth, widely known for some years as a translator, poet, and commentator on the social scene, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, a modern poet who operated a publishing house and a bookstore - and a group of jazz musicians.The poets read their poetry while the jazz band improvised. San Franciscans of every stratum of society came to hear what was obviously a new and intriguing artistic excursion. Essential listening pleasure for roll-neck wearing pipesmokers everywhere.

Larry Bank's Soul Family Album - Various. CD. (Kent Soul - CDKEND 284) Twenty four track collection of songs written by Larry Banks a performed by many. In 1964 Dave Godin was captivated by Bessie Banks´original recording of ‘Go Now’ and was incensed by the Moody Blues´ usurping of the song and what he considered an unduly hasty campaign by the British record company to pass their version off as the original and best. As a result, he decided to push Larry himself, championing his releases on Select, Kapp and Spring and his composing and production work with artists such as The Exciters, Kenny Carter, Milton Bennett, Jaibi, The Shaladons and The Geminis. This is the sum of Dave's work, bringing together various barely heard or unreleased Banks number as well as better known Northern Soul and Deep Soul classics.

Leaves - All The Good That's Happening. CD. (One Way Records - S21-17632) Best known for their US hit version of "Hey Joe", this American band had a lot more strings to their bow, as this accomplished second album from 1967 proves. Summery psychedelia in the style of Youngbloods or Buffalo Springfield, stand-out tracks include "Lemon Princess" and "Twilight Sanctuary". Jim Pons later joined Frank Zappa.

One of the funniest movies of all time.

Lemon Drops - Crystal Pure/Second Album. CD. (Collectables - COL-CD-0517) One of the many unsung heroes of 60's US psych/garage the Lemon Drops came within a hairs breadth of getting a major record deal with their wonderful "I Live In the Springtime" (included on the first Nuggets box set) which was a local hit in 1967 in Chicago and as far as New York. "It Happens everyday" and "Sometime Ago" are just as fine as the band moved away from a garage folk rock sound to a more psych flower power feel. This CD featues both deleted albums originally issued on Cicadelic. Classic US '60's sounds and now this CD is deleted! (all copies have a small cut out hole in inlay)

Lesley Duncan - Earth Mother. CD. (Demon Records - EDCD712) Lesley Duncan's second album, from 1972, this features contributions from Chris Spedding, The Herd's Andy Bown (later to become Status Quo's keyboard player) and her husband, Jimmy Horowitz, Dusty Springfield's arranger.

Light - Turn On The Light. CD. (Ugly Things - UTCD2205) The Light was a dynamic, multi-talented supergroup from California's Inland Empire. Formed early 1967, the group united the brightest talents from two of the area's most popular garage bands, the Bush and the Northside Moss. After attracting the attention of Music Machine producer Brian Ross they recorded a single for A&M Records, a Jekyll & Hyde pairing featuring a gorgeous Left-Banke-style A-side "Music Box" and a fuzz-guitar monster flipside, "Back Up." By the end of the summer they had evolved into an incendiary West Coast psychedelic rock ensemble comparable to the Buffalo Springfield or Moby Grape, but with the dual lead guitar firepower of the Beck-Page Yardbirds.

Lily - V.C.U (We See You). CD. (Garden Of Delights - CD 062) Lily were a band formed in Frankfurt during the early 1970's. They blended European style rock with jazz and proggresive overtures, with vocals in English. The LP, V.C.U. (We See You) was released in the Spring of 1973, and the group was marketed as a glam-rock band by their label. But this was not a true reflection of the type of music they played. So now we can appreciate the album as a full on rock affair and ignore the 'glam' tag. Four bonus tracks.

Litter - Emerge. CD. Third album by the US '60s punksters, the sound of The Litter had hardened up by the time of this 1969 release. With more of their own songwriting to the fore, plus covers of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and Love's "Little Red Book". A fine hard rock album which also includes a bonus track. Loggins & Messina - Full Sail / Mother Lode. CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD746) Two albums on one disc featuring the partnership of songwriter Kenny Loggins and ex-Buffalo Springfield / Poco member Jim Messina. From '73 and '74, both albums reached the US top ten. Originally planned as a solo career for Loggins country rock songs with Messina taking on the production duties, a partnership quickly arose and they recorded several albums together before Jim found success as a solo artist. Eighteen tracks digitally remastered and presented in a slip case.

Lord Sterling - Todays Songs For Tomorrow. CD. With influences from throughout the entire musical spectrum, any attempt to categorise the fantastic Lord Sterling would prove unsatisfying and ultimatley futile. Attempting descriptions such as "the bastard child of Hawkwind and Sonic Youth" or "the unlawful offSpring of Kyuss and one hundred and one mid-60s Nuggets garage bands" may be fun but it will never convey the experience of hearing this joyously messy album as it tears from hypnotic swirling synth grooves to straight up punk through a host of other styles before settling down to sleep on a wonderfully lethargic 11-minute cover of Pink Floyd's "Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun". Lovely.

Loudon Wainwright - Here Come The Choppers. CD. (Evangeline - GEL.4090) The long awaited new release from one of the 'Royal Family' of North American folk rock, alongside relatives Kate and Anna Mc Garrigle and offSpring Rufus and Martha. Accompanying Loudon ( whose acting career continues in earnest alongside his musical legacy) on this release are such luminaries as jazz guitar maestro Bill Frisell and supersession drummer Jim Keltner, the man behind the beats on such legendary albums as 'All Things Must Pass' and 'Tapestry'. As usual, the man's lost none of his acerbic wit or utter surrealism- check out 'Half Fist' 'Things' or 'Make Your Mother Mad' for proof. Those who loved the predecessor 'Last Man On Earth' will ove this.

Madeline Bell - Doin' Things. CD. (RPM - RPM285) A true underground legend, Madeleine Bell may not be a household name (yet) but her position as the pre-eminent session singer for the past forty years means her warm, soulful tones are instantly recognisable. Her beautiful voice has floated across radio, television, film soundtracks, the internet and now is finally available solo on CD. "Doin' Things", her second Phillips LP from 1968, is being re-issued for the first time with two non-album singles from the same period as well as a b-side to a single that prefaced this LP, Go Ahead On, a co-write with Dusty Springfield, who also recorded her own version. Hopefully the well-earned awareness of Madeline Bell's 60's legacy will continue to grow and grow.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Live In America. CD. (The Store For Music Ltd - SFMCD043) 1977 recording from the band formed after the dissolution of Manfred Mann and Chapter Three in 1970, and led by the charismatic keyboardist of the same name. Recorded in Boston for American radio, the group were riding on the success of their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s "Blinded By The Light" which hit the top spot in America and the top ten in the UK. Six years of touring experience had made the minto a tough live act that can clearly be heard here, they are a group at the peak of their powers.The eight track broadcasted performance has been boosted with three additional tracks, they were some of the last to feature bass player Colin Pattenden, who departed at the tours end.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Nightingales And Bombers. CD. Re-issue of the 1975 album originally released on Bronze records that contains the Bruce Springsteen track "Spirits in the Night" with ghostly synth sounds throughout.This album stands up to repeated listening decades after it was created as it's got quite a poppy touch on tracks like "Time is Right" (UK Single),whilst a jazzier slant pervades other cuts.

(Active Media - MMBOOK1) Superb- a four disc set of recordings, some never even heard since the day they were put down, that detail 35 years of this giant-conquering UK band, formed after the dissolution of Manfred Mann and Chapter Three in 1970, and led by the charismatic keyboardist of the same name. This stretches across all their lineups and a dozen or more talented players including Chris Thompson, Mick Rogers, Dave Flett, Colin Pattenden, Chris Slade and more recently Noel McCalla. All the hits are here: 'Joybringer', three Springsteen tunes ('Blinded By The Light' 'Spirit In The Night' 'For You') 'Davey's On The Road Again' and progged-out widdletastic covers of Dylan, The Police, Bob Marley, Shirley Bassey (are you sure about this? -Ed) and Michael Murphey. There's also some pretty damn good tunes that they wrote themselves!!! Uh-huh, it was the Manfreds- and 35 years later, it still is.

Mascots - Ellpee. CD. (Radioactive - RRCD136) Dare we say the Swedish Beatles???? This was their second album originally released on Decca in 1966 . The Mascots supported the Who, Chuck Berry, the Moody Blues, the Hollies, P J Proby and the Dave Clark Five, as well as appearing in movies, making guest appearances on TV programs for young people, and recording soundtracks.This is a great album. The influences are there for all to hear as was the case with most of the European bands of the time...but Garage/Psych it was and still is. The Beatles do still Spring to mind but that's just the start of it. Truly essential.

With an impressive line up from the UK folk/rock scene Fairport members Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dolly Collins (Shirley's sister), Poli Palmer from Blossom Toes and Roger Coulam, an original member of Blue Mink. Standout tracks 'Colorado Springs', 'The Castle Far', 'Dream Song', ' 'Thoughts For A Friend', 'Ballad Of Obray Ramse', 'Moses In The Sunshine' and 'Southern Comfort'.

Merrilee Rush (And The Turnabouts) - Angel Of The Morning- The Complete Bell Recordings. CD. (Rev Ola - CRREV143) Activist in Seattle Women in Rhythm & Blues; a member of the Northwest Hall Of Fame (which puts her on a par with the mighty Kingsmen and Sonics!); maker of one of THE classic hit singles - a radio staple ever since, and a front runner in the Memphis pop explosion which led to famous Soul factory American Studios producing The Box Tops, a whole slew of singles for Eternity's Children, 'Dusty In Memphis' and this classic collection of popsoulfolkrock recordings on Bell Records (check out the songwriter credits on the right!) - you’d be right in thinking Merilee Rush is nothing short of a legend! A huge live draw in their native Northwest, Merrilee and her band The Turnabouts were on tour in 1967 with their local superstar friends Paul Revere and The Raiders, who like Elvis and Dusty Springfield had been intrigued by the Soul and Pop masterpieces emanating from American Studios and decided to make an album there with the crack team of writers / producers / musicians. They recommended Merrilee to the legendary studio boss, Chips Moman, who asked her to record a version of ‘Angel Of The Morning’, the Chip Taylor future classic. When released as a single, it became a monster hit and there followed a whole load of great material on Bell Records (not to be confused with the Seventies glam label of the same name), with that classic American Studios sound to the fore, and Merrilee's voice - owing as much to Evie Sands and Jackie De Shannon as it did to her own unique take on the songs -was the icing on the cake, as Folkrock met Soulpop! At last, here are the complete Bell recordings, including the rare Quincy Jones produced take on 'What the World Needs Now' and Merrilee's amazing trippy version of the Motown classic 'Reach Out...I'll Be There'; apparently inspired by hearing Vanilla Fudge's overhaul of 'You Keep Me Hanging On', on the car radio one rainy night on tour - an amazing slice of Memphis pop Soul with a twist!!

Mike Harding - Bombers' Moon. CD. (Townsend - CDM003) A rare outing for Harding this time- an album (originally released in 1986) dedicated to the serious side of his output. The title track is a moving account of his father's death during World War II: other subjects tackled include his life as a musician in 60's beat-era Manchester ('The Back Of The Back Of The Moon'), Thatcherism, the loss of friends, the monotony of daily life viewed through seasons (as on 'January Man') and the futility of student politics. Two spirited covers, Eric Bogle's Australian war song 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' (covered also by the Pogues and The Men They Couldn't Hang) and Bruce Springsteen's 'Factory' complete a fine set.
