Gil Scott-Heron - Small Talk At 125th & Lennox. LP.
Gil's first album, and still his angriest to date. Musically a fair distance away from his mellower, jazzier, more soulful recordings, this was the sound of an impassioned young man rapping his firm beliefs over heavily percussive accompaniment and frenetic hard jazz blowing. This was the album that gave birth to 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' which became his anthem for many years to come, but there are several others ('Whitey On The Moon' 'The Subject Was Faggots' etc) of equal note here. Like The Last Poets, Weldon Irvine, Wanda Robinson, ESG and The Sequence, Gil is a vital cog in the development of black music since 1970. This is the album that started it all, and gave birth to about four genres simultaneously- in a beautiful heavyweight vinyl reissue..
